William John Gibson Sr., 87, passed away peacefully at his home on January 3, 2026.
William, "Bill" , was married for 59 years to his beloved wife, Barbara Jean Gibson. He was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, and was predeceased by his parents, William George Gibson and Viola Blanche Gibson, as well as his brothers, James and Phillip Gibson.
He graduated from Calais High School and went on to build a long and successful career, selling insurance for Metropolitan Life for 34 years. William proudly served as a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was an active member of the community, serving as a Jaycee Senator and belonging to the Woodland Spednic Club, Calais Masonic Lodge, and was a lifelong Anah Shriner. He was devoted to the Lord and always looked forward to helping serve food at the Second Baptist Church every Thanksgiving.
Bill loved to go dancing and bowling with Barbara any chance he could get. They were always hosting friends and family with lots of laughing, singing, guitars, and Bill keeping the beat on his "spoons". He also wouldn't turn down a poker game or horseshoes as long as the stakes weren't too high. He spent many weekends at the family camp he built in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. During his retirement years, Bill and Barbara spent their winters in Plant City, Florida, enjoying the warm weather, exploring the flea markets and attending the Strawberry Festival.
William is survived by his four children: Tami Peterson (Art) of Windham; Kandi Gibson (Frank Fischetti) of Ormond Beach, Florida; William J. Gibson Jr. (Rebecca) of Baileyville, Maine; and John Gibson (Sarah) of Oakland, Maine. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Marissa Exchange, Campbell, Rianne, and Jack Gibson, William J. Gibson, III, Jordon Denley, and Josh and Sean Abbott.
Funeral services will be held11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the Second Baptist Church in Calais, Maine. Donations can be made in Bill's name to Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Calais Second Baptist Church. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
