Obituary

Timothy Fox Sanford, 91, passed away on June 10, 2025 at his home. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, father-in-law, and friend. Tim was born on March 28, 1934 in Norwalk, Connecticut to David Curtis and Katherine Rodman (Fox) Sanford, and grew up in North Stamford and Darien, Connecticut. He was captain of the state championship hockey team of Darien High School and graduated in 1952. He attended Brown University where he received a bachelor's degree in Geology in 1956. During that time, he was a hutman at Lakes of the Clouds in the White Mountains, president of the Outing Club, and in the NROTC. He served for four years in the US Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in cryptology, stationed in the Pentagon and later in Kwajalein. He was in the Navy Reserve until 1968. Starting in 1960, for 1 ½ years, he toured Europe on a scooter and worked in Israel. He then attended the University of Connecticut where he met and married Elinor "Ellie" Minnick on March 7, 1964. After graduating with a Master of Science in Agronomy that same year, he began work as a soil scientist for Culbro, living in Avon, Connecticut. In 1965, he got his teaching certificate from the University of Hartford and taught science at Simsbury High School from 1967 to 1974. In 1970, Tim and Ellie and their children Jeff and Jenny became wrapped up in the "back to the land movement". During the summer of 1972, they were brought by the hand of the Lord to look for and find affordable land in Alexander, Maine. They spent two summers there, where Tim fixed up the buildings and helped establish a self-reliant homestead. In 1974, they sold their Avon home and moved there permanently. He started building a stone house, which took almost 10 years. He also built, repaired or maintained many other houses and helped family and neighbors with mechanical problems, welding, and anything else that was hands-on. He worked as an EMT, assistant Veterinarian on the US side of the border for Dr. George Dashner, caretaker for Beaver Lodge on Crawford Lake for many years, taught the 4th and 5th grades at Indian Township School in 1989, ran his own business "Handyman Unlimited" and "Grampa's Toolbox", worked at Portland Glass in Calais, was custodian at Alexander Elementary School, and more recently, shoveled the walkways of the Calais Hospital campus for two winters. He was a substitute teacher at the St. Croix Regional Technical Center and supported Ellie in her Food Service and Life Skills classroom there and later at the elementary schools in Charlotte and Wesley. For several years, he was the 24/7 caregiver to his elderly father-in-law Bill, mother-in-law Barbara, and, recently, sister-in-law Martha. He also served the town of Alexander on the Volunteer Fire Department, as a founding leader of Cub Scout Pack 127, on the School Board, and the Planning Board. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on November 29, 1985. He, his wife and children went to the Washington DC temple in December 1986, so they would be able to be together as a family for eternity, even after death. He was a devoted member and held various callings in the Saint Stephen Ward of the Church, including Sunday School teacher, Boy Scout master of Troop 141 (in the 1990's), Bishop (2000-2004), emergency preparedness and self-reliance specialist, as well as a choir member and diligent ministering brother. He was also a high councilor to the Houlton Branch (2004-2007). He and his wife served a Church mission where they were in charge of physical facilities at the Joseph Smith Birthplace Visitors' Center in Sharon, Vermont from 2007 to 2009. In addition to his parents, Tim is predeceased by his only sibling David Curtis Sanford III and wife Norma Larson. He is survived by his wife and their four children: Jeffrey (Jamille), Jennifer Reese, David (Jennifer), and Emily Runnels, grandchildren Mirielle, Colby (Aleisha), Claire (Zachary), Logan (Leah), June, Esther, Elizabeth (Nephi), Isaac (Alyssa), Benjamin, Katherine, Lillian (Bryce), Sebastian, Angelica (Kade), Isaac, Dakota, Ana, Aiden, Patience, Reina, Phebe, John, and Rachel, as well as great-grandchildren Faye, Rose, June, Alden, Vernon, Stella Mae, Franklin, Van, Elinor, Adeline, Felicity, Daphni, Ava, Aimataarii Trident, Malakai, Charleigh, and Rhyland. He was also known for whistling, always keeping a detailed journal, sharing his testimony of seeing God's hand in the everyday miracles in his life, his physical longevity, and his practical, rational view on things. His life has been a testimony to the enabling power of Jesus Christ. Funeral held on June 14, 2025 at 2 PM at the St. Stephen Ward meetinghouse of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, on 200 Union Street, St. Stephen. N.B. A memorial service will be held next summer. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.MaysFuneralHome.com
