Obituary

Susan Thelma Small, 70, passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Born in Pleasant Ridge, New Brunswick, on December 5, 1954, to Blair and Freda (Noddin) Johnson, Susan's life was a testament of love, resilience, and an unwavering spirit that not only touched but also enriched the lives of many. Her journey began in the quaint town of Pleasant Ridge, carried her to a blissful marriage with William Charles Small in June 1975, and saw her nurture a wonderful family in Red Beach, Calais, Maine. Susan's love for the outdoors was infectious. Whether it was feeding birds, caring for stray cats, or simply basking in the glory of wildlife, she found peace and tranquility in nature. Her fondness for walking along the rocky coastlines, gazing at lighthouses, and spending time at her son and daughter-in-law's camp on Nash's Lake painted a beautiful picture of her life—a life lived with simplicity, elegance, and a profound appreciation for the world around her. With a mind that cherished challenges, Susan loved to solve crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Above all, family was Susan's most cherished treasure. She poured love and warmth into her family, creating a home filled with laughter, love, and a sense of belonging. Susan's absence leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of her surviving children, Patrick Small (Tara) of Calais, and Rose Small of Pembroke, and her cherished grandchildren, Brookelynn and William. Her legacy also lives on in her siblings, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Calvin and Alice Johnson, Sharon and Jack Olsen, Randal and Cheryl Johnson, Gail and Leon Savoie, Adena Tozier, Ernie Johnson, Brenda and Stephen Whittier, Lynette and Dale Richardson, Carmen Small, Robert and Sandra Small, Diane Chalout, Wayne and Sondra Small, Beatrice and Clifford Cheney, and Wallace and Stacie Small, and numerous nieces and nephews. She now reunites in peace with those who preceded her in death: her parents, Blair and Freda; her beloved husband, William; her daughter Alice; siblings, Linda, Eric, Cecile, Joan, Virgil, and Valerie; and her mother-in-law who always held a special place in her heart, Mary Small. During her time at Eastport Memorial Nursing Home, she received exceptional care and love from the staff, and for that, we are eternally grateful. A graveside service to celebrate Susan's life will be held 10 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Red Beach Cemetery in Calais. Arrangements are under the care of Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. We invite you to share your fond memories, stories, and photos of Susan on the memorial page at www.MaysFuneralHome.com. In these reflections, we find solace and the strength to keep her spirit alive in our hearts.
