Obituary

Sherrill Alice (Scott) Meserve, 89, born December 16, 1936, lived a life marked by resilience, devotion, and a remarkable ability to keep moving forward no matter what challenges came her way. She passed away peacefully on her own terms on June 19th, 2026.

Sherrill began her career as a nurse in Canada before eventually making her home here in Maine. She later spent many years working with the Head Start program in Calais, where she helped generations of young children get their start in life. For her granddaughter Samantha, Head Start was also where Grammy worked. Long after she had outgrown the program herself, Samantha would stop by Sherrill's office to visit, be thoroughly spoiled, and enjoy the special privilege of sitting in the "adult" office chair during school days.

Sherrill was widowed at an early age after the loss of her beloved husband, Gordon Meserve, shortly after his return from the war. Sherrill faced the challenging task of building a life and raising a family on her own. She never remarried, choosing instead to devote herself to her family, her work, and the community she loved. Through every hardship, she met life with determination, independence, and quiet strength. Her resilience became an example to everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Sherrill found joy in the simple things. She loved bingo nights, trips to the casino with her dear friends, and faithfully choosing her lottery numbers each week. Her winnings were always a bonus- the time spent with her beloved friends and family is what truly mattered.

She was a dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Baileyville, Maine for decades, where she devoted countless hours in support of veterans and her community in honor of her husband. She always believed in showing up and lending a hand.

Sherrill was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Meserve; her sister, Mary Scott; her son, Robert Meserve; and her grandson, Gordie Corbett. She also has many fur babies to catch up with- particularly Gypsy, Koda, Big Ben, Tara, and Gremlin. She leaves behind her son, Rocky, a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many dear friends, and countless others whose lives were enriched by knowing her.

The photograph accompanying this obituary was taken during a birthday celebration held when Sherrill believed she had reached the age of 90 during her battle with dementia. Though she was actually 89, those who loved her saw no reason to correct her. The joy captured in that photograph reflects exactly how her family chooses to remember her: smiling, surrounded by love, and celebrating a life well lived.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside will be arranged at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary in Baileyville, Maine.

Sherrill's life was not measured by wealth or recognition, but by the people she cared for, the family she loved, and the strength she showed through every season of her life. Her legacy lives on in the generations that follow her.
