Obituary

Sandra Pottle, 87, passed away surrounded by family on February 6, 2026. Sandra was born in Machias on June 27, 1938, the only daughter of Archie and Greta Morang. Sandra had a short time out of state training to be a nurse after high school, but returned and married James Pottle of Perry, whom she met at a dance in Dennysville. Sandra and Jim grew old on the family property, a dairy farm with much woodland, also known as Pottle's Tree Farm which was started by Jim's father upon his return from WWI. Sandra and Jim were extremely proud of the property, which was managed carefully. Wanting to share the property, they hosted an outdoor classroom through Project Learning Tree for local schools and welcomed students for several years. They also hosted Stronghearts, a non-profit started by a young local couple for the benefit of children with heart disease, for a winter fun day. The Stronghearts event returned every year for 20 years. Sandra and Jim received many awards and recognition over the years, to include: Maine Outstanding Tree Farm (1974 & 1998), Washington County Outstanding Tree Farm (1994, 1995, & 1998), Outstanding Forest Stewards (1997), American Tree Farm System recognition for work with Shared Streams in Maine, Maine Project Learning Tree Stewardship Award (2005), and recognition for many years of support to the Washington County Soil & Water Conservation District. Sandra and Jim created a labyrinth on the property for visitors to use. It has been a great source of peace and comfort to many family members, friends, and visitors. With her approval, the farm hosted the Boyden Lake Half Marathon in the spring of 2025, to benefit several veteran organizations. Sandra had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid bird watcher. She took a keen interest in the flora and fauna around her and was always delighted to find a lady slipper flower or rarely seen bird. She loved to organize picnics, hikes, and camping trips. Regardless of weather conditions, Sandra would gather a group in celebration of the first day of each season at Gleason's Cove in Perry. Sandra climbed Mount Katahdin many times during her lifetime, and shared much family time at Baxter Park. She loved to spend time combing the local beaches for beach glass and arrow heads, and was credited with finding some historically or geographically significant artifacts. She was extremely knowledgeable about local history, and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution through the Bickford's and Libby's, and was a proud Mayflower descendant through Eaton (married Christian Penn) and possibly Billington. Sandra worked for the postal service for over 30 years. During that time, she went above and beyond in the performance of her duties as a rural carrier, often delivering packages to the door of customers who had limited mobility. She made many friends on her postal route in the Alexander and Crawford area, and was warmly recognized everywhere she went. Upon retirement, Sandra immediately started volunteering for Hospice, and became fast friends with all her patients and families. She took Reiki classes, a hands-on healing technique, and acquired books on juicing in an attempt to benefit the patients, and promote good health. Sandra is survived by sons Stephen and wife Renee of Kennewick, WA, Andrew and wife Debbie of Perry, daughter Amy and husband Darin O'Neal of Riverview, FL, and daughter-in-law Sue Pottle of Carencro, LA. She is also survived by grandchildren Adam, Trevor, Kallie, Mitchell, Seth, Katherine, Riley, Andrew and Stephanie, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her beloved pet, Rosie. She was predeceased by her parents Francis Archibald and Greta (Libby) Morang, husband James K. Pottle, son Dean Francis Pottle, and grandson Patrick McDonald. The family wants to recognize all of the medical professionals who helped keep Sandra comfortable at the end of her life, specifically the staff at Marshall's Health Care, CHCS Hospice and Downeast Hospice volunteers, you all know who you are. Thank you for your incredible service to Sandra and her family. Also, we wish to thank all of the family and friends that visited her and brightened her day while she was at Marshall's Heath Care. A celebration of Sandra's life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 11:00 am at Pottle's Tree Farm in Perry, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local hospice organization.
