Obituary

Sadie Madeline "Sally" (Stuart) Smith, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at her home with her family by her side. Sally was born in St. Stephen, NB on September 19, 1931, the daughter of Stillman and Phyllis Stuart. Graduating from high school at 15, Sally worked at both Ganong Bros. Chocolates in St. Stephen and the St. Croix Cotton Mill in Milltown, NB. She was proud of her Canadian heritage and held fond memories of growing up on the Old Bay Road with her siblings. It seemed fitting that Sally died on Canada Day, as she often looked out her front window across the St. Croix River to the Ledge Road and broke into "O Canada," encouraging anyone within hearing range to join along. Sally married John "Jack" Smith in 1951, and they would go on to spend 69 happy years together until his passing in 2020. Sally and Jack were both proud to live in Calais and highly supportive of various civic and charitable organizations in both Calais and the neighboring communities. They raised their family in Calais and ran successful businesses, including Border Electric, Inc. and Eastern Maine Appliance. Sally's young adult days were filled with transporting her children to practices, games, concerts – anything in which they had interest. She also found time to serve as a Cub Scout den mother, to decorate cakes, bowl at the St. Croix Club, attend Garden Club meetings, and visit her beloved camps in Charlotte. She and Jack always assumed that their children would pursue higher education, and both had great pride that all five of their children did just that. In recognition of this interest, her children created the Jack and Sally Smith Scholarship that has been awarded for nearly twenty years. In more recent years Sally spent countless hours attending to her grandchildren, providing them a home away from home and cheerleading them at their activities. Sally was also a great cook and loved entertaining family members and participating in other family activities. Her home at River Road has remained the hub of Smith family activity for the last several decades. Faith was always a cornerstone of Sally's life. Raised in the Anglican tradition as a child, she later became an active member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church. For over seventy years Sally wore many hats, including Senior Warden, Treasurer, and member of the choir, altar guild, and vestry. Until recent years there was rarely any event at St. Anne's that didn't include her participation – and often her famous homemade donuts. Sally loved the outdoors, anything living (with the exception perhaps of mosquitoes and blackflies), and loved the bounties of the area. She enjoyed the chance to plant trees, flowers, vegetables and fruits whenever and wherever she could. Sally particularly enjoyed picking blueberries, blackberries, apples, mayflowers and any other flower/weed that blossomed or had a fragrance. An extraordinary poet, Sadie had a way with words. Her poetry touched the hearts of many, evoking fond memories and a wistful smile. Sally loved her family unconditionally. She loved her adopted City and country as well as her homeland. She loved her God and faith. She loved her friends. She loved her life. In addition to her parents and husband Jack, Sally was predeceased by her stepmother Elizabeth "Lib" Stuart, daughter-in-law, Kathy Smith; sisters Shirley Matheson and husband Leonard, and Charlotte Gowan and husband Norman; brothers Albert Stuart and wife Shelauh, Jack Stuart and wife Betty, Joseph Stuart and wife Bessie, Vincent Libby, and Stillman Stuart. Surviving are her five children, Theresa Smith and John Smith Jr., both of Calais, Joseph Smith and wife Mary Jo of Rye, NH, Robert Smith and wife Chelsea of Arundel, and Sheridan Smith and wife Valerie of Baileyville; 12 grandchildren, Melissa Audy and husband Matt, Cristen Melo, Patrick Ramsey, Vincent Ramsey, Jonathan Smith and wife Andrea, Emily Smith and husband Matthew, Stephen Smith and companion, Tiana Lola, Sarah Pike and husband Nathan, Lucas Smith, Quinton Smith, Sadie Smith, and Brooke Smith; thirteen great-grandchildren, Cooper and Kaci Calkins, Aiden Melo, Elaine Smith, Riley, Jackson, Emma, Collin, and James Smith, Elouise and Penelope Smith, and Isla and Ada Pike; sister-in-law Shirley Stuart of St. Stephen; and many nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to Visiting Hours on Friday, July 11th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. The funeral will be held at St. Anne's Church, 29 Church St., Calais on Saturday July 12th at 10:00 am, with burial to occur immediately after at the Calais Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to St. Anne's Episcopal Church or to a charity of your choice.
