Obituary

Robert "Bob" Burns, of Calais, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 12, 1942, in Gardiner, Maine to Ellie and James Burns, Bob lived a life marked by dedication and service.

Bob served his country as a medic during the Vietnam War and was awarded an Army Commendation Medal as a testament to his courage and commitment. On August 31, 1968, he married the love of his life, Lorna Miller-Burns, in Christmas Cove, Maine. Their union was a source of strength and joy for 56 wonderful years.

A graduate of the University of Maine in Machias, Bob dedicated 36 years to educating young minds, leaving a lasting impact on countless students. 22 of those years were spent teaching at Pleasant Point Beatrice Rafferty School, which he often referred to as some of his best. His career in education culminated in his role as principal, where he served with distinction until his retirement.

Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, whose family was the center of his world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorna; his children, Matthew Gladding and Beth Burns-Niederstadt; and his grandchildren, Matthew Gladding Jr., Bronte Hardin, Jacob Beal, James Beal, and Pauline Gladding. He also leaves behind his brothers, David and James Burns, who will cherish his memory.

In keeping with Bob's wishes, no formal funeral will be held. Instead, his family will honor his life privately, celebrating the legacy of a man who believed, "1942-2024: It’s all in the dash."

Bob's warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of kindness and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched.
