Obituary

It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of Richard Monk, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He passed away peacefully at his home in Vanceboro on July 18, 2025, at the age of 82. Richard was an amazing person who was known by many. He had a big heart and was always there when people needed him. He had an endless source of wisdom and patience; he was truly his family's real-life Superman. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was born November 19, 1942, in Vanceboro, Maine, the son of the late Clarence Monk and Alice (Swaney) Harris. Richard has now joined Teresa Monk, his loving wife of 59 years in Heaven. Richard is survived by his son Brian Monk and Beth of Belgrade, Maine; a daughter Cheryl Long and husband Mark of Vanceboro, Maine; four grandchildren, Anthony Monk and partner Maureen Mahoney of Mount Vernon, Maine, Colleen Monk and husband Dustin of Farmingdale, Maine, Katrina Long and partner Brady Long of Bangor, Maine, and Kayla Long and partner Anthony Peters of Bangor, Maine; two great-grandchildren, Laynee Brown and the late Hadlee Brown of Farmingdale, Maine; brother William Monk and Stacy of Vanceboro, Maine; sister Brenda McLaughlin and husband Joe of St. Stephen, New Brunswick; brother-in-law, the late Sherman VanHorne of St. Stephen, New Brunswick; brother-in-law, the late Robert Dyer and wife Norma of Lambert Lake, Maine; sister-in-law Eleanor Dyer of Vanceboro, Maine; and brother-in-law Otis Dyer Jr. of Lambert Lake, Maine. Richard graduated from Vanceboro High School. He then ventured off to Connecticut where he married the love of his life, Teresa (Dyer) Monk. In 1966, Richard got drafted and joined the U.S. Army, where he spent two years stationed in Germany. When Richard returned home he reunited with his wife and son in Vanceboro. Richard worked for 38 years for the railroad, first for Maine Central, Canadian Atlantic Railway, and then Eastern Maine Railway. Richard also owned and operated his family business, Monk's Texaco / Monk's Variety Inc. for 36 years until his retirement in 2005. Richard loved baseball and collecting baseball cards. He was a big Yankee fan and wouldn't hardly leave the house if there was a Yankee game on. He loved going moose hunting every year with the boys, the whole crew prayed every year that someone in the group got a moose permit. He loved being surrounded by his family on the holidays, he always knew he could spend a couple extra days with his kids, grandkids, and all their fur babies. He loved animals, especially dogs, and he loved his little fur baby Josie. Richard was Josie's best friend and she misses him terribly. He loved telling stories and always put a few wise tales or two into his conversations. Richard's biggest joy was spending time at his camps on Spednic Lake, his little piece of Heavon on Earth. He enjoyed working on his log cabin which he built with his own hands from the ground up. Richard was a member of the American Legion Frederick S. Mills Post 172 in Vanceboro, Maine, Order of the Eastern Star #8 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Masonic Granite Lodge No. 119 A.F. & A.M. in McAdam, New Brunswick, Charlotte County Shrine Club in St. Stephen, and the Luxor Shriners Clown Unit in Saint John, New Brunswick.
