Phyllis Margaret Buzzell passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026, at the Barron Center in Portland, Maine, at the age of 97. Born on December 15, 1928, in Calais, she was the daughter of James and Theresa (Curran) Canavan.
Phyllis's life was a testament to love and dedication. Educated at both home and the Maine Institute for the Blind, she overcame challenges with grace and tenacity. Phyllis married Edward Buzzell and devoted herself to raising their eight wonderful children in a warm and nurturing home. She had an immense passion for cooking, often preparing comforting meals for her family while enjoying country western music, her favorite soap operas, and the wisdom of her talking Bible.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her beloved husband Edward; two daughters, Joan Denley and Janice Burgess; a granddaughter, Cindy Buzzell; and her two beloved sisters, Rowena Chambers Wilcox and Mary Bridges. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her six surviving children: Brenda Buzzell, Lorraine Buzzell, Sherry Buzzell, Sandra Collins, Edna Buzzell, and Edward "Buddy" Buzzell Jr. and his companion Susan Wildes; and son-in-law Richard Denley. In addition, she will be dearly missed by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, as well as her cherished nieces and nephews.
A funeral service to celebrate Phyllis's remarkable life will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Following the service, burial will follow in the Calais Cemetery
