Obituary

Nellie Mae Barnard, 82, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving and devoted husband David Richard Barnard, and their three children. Born on October 2, 1943, in Eastport, Maine, to John F. Cassidy and Avis B. Cassidy (Hanson), Nellie's life was filled with love, commitment, and resilience. Her life story was shaped by her lifelong love for her husband, David Richard Barnard, and her dedication to nursing. The love story of Nellie and David began at the tender ages of 9 and 11, when Nellie spotted David standing beside the black rod iron fence at Immaculate Conception Catholic School, and knew that he would be hers when they grew up. Meeting again years later in front of her father's shoe store when David needed new shoes, not only did he get new shoes, but he got the beginning of a beautiful 62-year journey of shared dreams and mutual support. Nellie graduated from Calais Memorial High School and continued her education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Following her college and David's stint in the Navy, they returned to their hometown where Nellie's passion for nursing was fulfilled at the Calais Regional Hospital and Doctor Gordon Sear's office in Baileyville. Her dedication to her profession was one of her proudest accomplishments. Nellie was more than a beloved wife, mother, sister, and nurse. She was a beacon of strength, setting an example for all who knew her by overcoming chronic illness with indomitable spirit. Her mantra, "Spit and keep going," encapsulates the courage with which she faced life's challenges. Nellie's resilience was matched only by her deep love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in her husband David, her children Anne Donahue and partner Greg Johnson, Elizabeth Boomer and husband Brent, and David Barnard and wife Michelle. She is also survived by her brothers John Cassidy and wife Elaine, Vinton Cassidy and wife Anne, William Cassidy and wife Sue, Sister-in-law Teresa Cassidy (wife of Edmond), Brother-in-law Pat Barnard and wife Margaret, and Sister-in-law Patricia Barnard (wife of Paul), her six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Nellie was predeceased by her parents, John and Avis Cassidy, and brother Edmund "Bouf" Cassidy. Her loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved her, but her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched and the indelible memories she left behind. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in honor of Nellie at St. James Catholic Church, Baileyville, on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11 am, followed by a committal service at the cemetery in Baileyville. In lieu of flowers, to honor Nellie, do something kind for someone and be good to one another. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. We encourage all who knew Nellie to share their memories, photos, and condolences at www.MaysFuneralHome.com. In this way, we can keep Nellie's spirit alive and celebrate the remarkable woman she was. Let Nellie's life be a reminder to us all about the importance of kindness and resilience in our own lives.
