Obituary for Myrtle Linnie Smith (Zwicker)

Calais - Myrtle Smith of Marshalls Healthcare Facility, Machias, Maine, and formerly of Calais, Maine, passed away on February 06, 2018, ten days before her 96th birthday. She was the younger daughter of Wallace Zwicker and Alice Morse Trecartin Zwicker of White Head Island, Grand Manan, NB.

Myrtle (Mernie to many) left White Head at 16 to begin working as a maid and later as a nanny to Drs Metcalfe’s children in Calais. She worked at Crosby’s Nursing Home until she purchased the home at 13 Washington Street, Calais, in the late 1950’s which she owned and operated until the late 1970’s.
Mernie married Carl Smith in 1975 and they did not have any children of their own. She owned a cottage at Pleasant Lake for many years and it was the fun place for all her nieces and nephews to vacation. Mernie was loved by many and her amazing love of having good fun for everyone was outstanding.

Mernie and Carl were active members of Woodland Baptist Church and served as Gideons for many years. They loved to travel, spend time at the cottage and provide for friends. Mernie never waterskied but she made sure that everyone else had the fun for her. And . . . she loved pink.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carl, her sister Kathleen Tate, (Kenton) and by her half-brother, Herbert Trecartin (Madge) and her half-sister, Bessie Trecartin Ingalls (Hartford) as well as many nieces and nephews. Surviving are her nephew, Dennison Tate (Ann) of Berry Mills, NB; niece Karen Morse (Myron) of White Head Island; and a niece Arlene Small (Stanley) of Browns Flat, NB; as well as the children of their families.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Mays Funeral Home, Calais, where the funeral will be held on Saturday, February 10th, 2018 at 11am local time. Visitation will be at 10:30 at the funeral home. Donations to honour Myrtle may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice or to The Gideons.
