Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Merle Harvard Knowles Jr. on July 1, 2026, at his home in Alexander, Maine. Born on December 17, 1946, in Calais, Maine, Merle was the son of Merle and Jean Knowles Sr. His journey through life was marked by hard work, dedication, and a spirit that touched the lives of many.

From his early years, Merle exhibited a remarkable curiosity and work ethic. He attended the Hale School in Alexander and later graduated with honors from Calais High School as a member of the Class of 1965. Following graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. Army, where he worked as a Nike missile repairman based in Stuttgart, Germany. His time in Germany was filled with adventure as he skied in the Alps, visited Austria, where The Sound of Music was filmed, and explored France, including the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe.

Upon returning home, Merle began a distinguished career at Georgia-Pacific, quickly earning his Master Electrician license. His commitment to his craft was rivaled only by his love for his family. On December 28, 1969, he married the love of his life, Ruth Blaney. Their marriage, which flourished for nearly 57 years, became the foundation of a vibrant family life filled with love, laughter, and hard work.

Merle was a man of many talents and passions. He was a skilled carpenter, dedicated farmer, persistent Maine wild blueberry grower, and skilled heavy equipment operator. His joy in working the land and nurturing it was evident in everything he did. He was a proud collector of Farmall H and M tractors and found happiness in every aspect of rural life. Merle also cherished the outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing whenever possible. A dedicated runner, he participated in many running events, including Super Jogger Day in 1973, when he completed the 29-mile run from the Calais Customs House to the Eastport Breakwater. He also enjoyed metal detecting and visiting yard sales in search of Knowles china, interesting antiques, and old farm relics, never passing up the opportunity to buy a shovel with a broken handle.

Family was the center of Merle's universe. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren, showering them with love and encouragement. A master storyteller, his blue eyes would light up as he shared stories from the past. Merle was always doing or saying something to make everyone laugh, and his wonderful sense of humor brought joy to all who knew him.

Merle leaves behind his devoted wife, Ruth, and their children and grandchildren: son Merle Knowles III and his wife, Cherry, and their daughters, Alyannah and Adrielle; son Steven Knowles and his sons, Seth, Luke, and Avery, and their mother, April, and his daughter, Stephanie, and her mother, Erica; daughter Beckery Renaud and her children, Lexus, Gehrig, and Grady; and son Mark Knowles. Merle is further survived by his brother-in-law, George Blaney; sister-in-law, Sylvia Blaney; nephews John, Adam, and Andy; nieces Betty Jean and Ashley; and cousin Foster Carlow.

Merle was predeceased by his grandson, Luke Knowles; his parents, Merle and Jean Knowles; his brothers, Leslie Knowles Sr. and John Knowles Sr.; and his nephew, Leslie Knowles Jr.

In accordance with Merle's wishes, there will be no services. Instead, his family invites all who knew him to remember him in their own way, cherishing the love he shared and the memories that will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
