Obituary

Mary Elizabeth McLellan, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on September 12, 2026, at the age of 78. Born in Calais, Maine, on December 14, 1947, she was the daughter of Clyde and Muriel (Gustaveson) Doten.

Mary's journey through life was one of dedication and compassion. A proud graduate of Calais High School, Class of 1966, she pursued her passion for nursing at St. Mary's School of Nursing in Lewiston, where she earned her degree in 1969. Shortly after graduating, she married her high school sweetheart, Douglas McLellan, beginning a partnership that would flourish for decades.

Mary's nursing career started at Calais Regional Hospital, where she would go on to make a significant impact in the O.B. department, ultimately serving as its manager until her well-deserved retirement in 2011. Her commitment to learning was unwavering, and she furthered her education to earn a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Even after retirement, her nurturing spirit led her to continue serving as a part-time nurse until 2018.

A dedicated member of the Second Baptist Church in Calais, Mary enriched her community by serving as the Baring Town Clerk for 35 years. Her passions included traveling, photography, sewing, and scrapbooking, yet her heart was most fulfilled by the love of her family. Being a mother and grandmother brought her immeasurable joy, and she cherished the unique privilege of being present for the birth of each of her beloved grandchildren.

Mary was predeceased by her parents and her infant sister, Laurie Doten. She is survived by her devoted husband and best friend, Douglas McLellan; her two children, Laurie Green and her husband Steven of Casco, and Duane McLellan and his wife Crystal of Baring; her "bonus daughter," Merete Hamre and husband Knut of Kongsberg, Norway; grandchildren Ethan Green and his wife Kali of Fort Bragg, NC, Abby Rioux and her husband Zac of Lakenheath, England, Austin McLellan of Alexander, Casey McLellan of Baring, and Sidney McLellan of Baring, along with her "bonus grandchildren," Maja, Alva, and Tuva from Norway; and three great-grandchildren, Weston Rioux, Hazel Green, and Ella Green. She is also survived by her sister Diane Peek of Houston, TX, and her brother Clyde Doten Jr. and his wife Gail of Calais, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Allan and Barbara McLellan of Alexander, and Carole and David Boynton of NJ, as well as many nieces, nephews, and a special cousin, Sandra Sherrard and her husband Michael.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 12 noon until 1 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, located at 21 Church St., Calais. Following the visitation, a Celebration of Mary's life will commence at 1 p.m. After the service, Mary will be laid to rest at the Baring Cemetery, surrounded by the love of her family and community.

The family invites all who knew and loved Mary to join them in honoring her remarkable life. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services, where condolences, memories, and photos can be shared at Mary's remembrance page at www.MaysFuneralHome.com.

Mary's gentle spirit, kindness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all whose lives she touched.
