Obituary

With hearts full of love and memories, we bid farewell to Mary Perryman Hazelwood, who peacefully left us on May 8, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in Scarsdale, New York on June 23, 1932, to Francis and Vera (Pearson) Perryman, Mary's life was a testament to her strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her community and family. Mary's journey began in Scarsdale, but her zest for life and learning led her to the University of Connecticut. Her path took a turn towards love when she met and married John Clifford Hazelwood, and together, they built a life filled with laughter, hard work, and shared dreams. For a time, Mary focused on raising their three children, but her industrious spirit led her back into the workforce. She teamed up with her husband in the insurance industry, co-owning and operating Jewett & Hazelwood Insurance in Calais. Later in life, Mary found joy and fulfillment in being a substitute teacher for local schools, touching countless young lives with her wisdom and kindness. She was a steadfast presence at local student athletic events, cheering from courtside at basketball games, and watching baseball at Dicenzo field. An avid reader with a penchant for game shows, Mary welcomed every opportunity to learn and grow. Mary's legacy of love and dedication lives on in her three children, Margaret Hazelwood of Calais, Frank Hazelwood and wife Lauryl Williams of North Windham, and Fred Hazelwood of Bangor. She was a proud grandmother to her grandsons, Greg and Aaron Hazelwood, a cherished sister to Ann Burke of New Jersey, and an aunt to several nieces and a nephew. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Vera Perryman, and her beloved husband, John. Her radiant smile, loving heart, and nurturing spirit will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Mary's farewell service will be celebrated by The Rev. Sara Gavit 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 29 Church St., Calais. She will be laid to rest at the Woodland Cemetery in Baileyville. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Calais. As we remember and celebrate Mary's life, we invite you to share your fond memories, stories, and photos of Mary P. on her memorial page at www.MaysFuneralHome.com. These shared moments of joy, laughter, and love will serve as a lasting tribute to Mary's beautiful life and spirit.
