Obituary

Mary Ann Fox (Willis), age 88, of Calais, Maine, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026. She was born on August 21, 1937, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Alice (White) Willis and Allerton Willis. Mary grew up in Bantam, Connecticut, and attended Litchfield High School, graduating with the Class of 1955. Mary Ann Willis was married to Bartholomew Knox Jr., and together they brought six children into the world during their years of marriage. They later divorced in 1974. In 1982, Mary remarried Stanley Fox. The couple relocated to Downeast Maine, where they lived out the remainder of their lives. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, wife, and friend. She cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Throughout her life, Mary worked as a homemaker—raising six children was truly a job in itself. She had a deep love for animals and owned many cats and dogs over the years, but her most cherished companion was her Pomeranian, Princess Buttercup ("PB" for short), whom she adored for 18 years. Mary treated that dog like royalty, making the name Princess perfectly fitting. Mary enjoyed crocheting and knitting and gifted many beautiful handmade afghans to loved ones over the years. She was also a wonderful cook, known for her ability to create a gourmet meal out of whatever was on hand. In her younger years, Mary loved tending her garden and homesteading. She lived a simple yet humble life. Those who knew Mary will remember her for her kind heart, sense of humor, and strong-willed personality. Mary Ann Fox was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Allerton Willis; the father of her children, Bartholomew Knox Jr.; her husband, Stanley Fox; her sons, Dennis Knox and Joseph Knox; her sister, Betty Lewis; her brothers, Edwin Willis, Allerton Willis Jr., and Robert Willis; and her best friend, Rena Pepper. Mary is survived by her children: Bartholomew Knox III, Daniel Knox, Kimberly Charbonneau (Knox), and James Knox; her grandchildren: Joshua Greenwell, Ryan Knox, Angela Knox, Erica Lyons, Mathew Knox, Meaghan Colbeth (Knox), Skye Taylor (Davis), James Knox Jr., Judd Kinney, Aidan Knox, and McKayla Knox; and her great-grandchildren: Autumn, Caiden, Mickayla, Renesme, Evelyn, Krew, Rylan, Niara, Noah, and Marshall. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later time in the summer with family. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. "Think of me and I'll be there."
