Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Margaret Phelps, 91, who left us peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 5, 1934, to Verne and Leona (Egan) Thornton in Princeton, Margaret's life was painted with love, resilience, and an enduring spirit that touched every soul she encountered. Her vibrant character and warm smiles will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her. Margaret was a beacon of strength and dedication. Raised in Topsfield, she blossomed into a remarkable woman who cherished every moment of life. On May 1, 1954, she married her soulmate, Lee Alvah Phelps. Their love story spanned across the scenic landscapes of Maine before they settled in Princeton, where they raised their family. As a cook for the Princeton Elementary School and employee at Ware Knitters in Calais, Margaret worked diligently to enrich the lives of others. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she and Lee started their own businesses, Lee Phelps & Son, Princeton Mobile Station, and Topsfield General Store, where she served as the backbone and bookkeeper. Margaret's legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for community will continue to inspire generations to come. A former member of the Princeton Congregational Church, Margaret's faith was her guiding compass. She was an avid outdoors person, who found joy in fishing, snow sledding, and four-wheeling. But above all, Margaret's greatest joy was spending time with her family. Her love was a comforting blanket that will continue to keep her family warm during the coldest days. In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband Lee; granddaughter Myke; great-grandson Matthew; brother James Thornton; sister Ida Mae Renaud; and her faithful canine companions Dinky and Bella. Surviving are her three sons, Alvah Phelps of Princeton, Robert Phelps and wife Betty of Topsfield, and Glendon Phelps and wife Linda of Princeton; ten grandchildren, Jason (Melissa), Nathan (Jessica), Amanda, Angela (Nib), Patrick (Beth), Samantha, Shain (Sue), Shawn (Cindy), Ryan (Mikayla), and Jalen (Sarah); great-grandchildren, Sabre, Evan, Lee, Avry, Brynn, Gavin, Griffin, Reece, Jordyn, Parker, Hadleigh, Jack, Trent, Brayden, Samara, Camryn, and Carson; great-great grandchildren, Baby Raye, Noah, and Charlotte; sister-in-law Helen Dwelley; and many nieces and nephews, including special niece Bonnie Tibbetts and husband Bob; and special nephews Robert and Richard Renaud. A graveside service will be held in her honor at the Princeton Cemetery in the spring, where we will celebrate the remarkable life she led. Arrangements are by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. As we remember and celebrate the life of Margaret, we invite you to share your cherished memories and upload photos of her to the memorial page at www.MaysFuneralHome.com. Your stories, photos, and messages of condolence will serve as comfort and a loving tribute to our dear Margaret.
