Obituary for Lloyd Burton Gibbs

Lloyd Burton GibbsBaileyville – Lloyd Burton Gibbs, 83, died Friday, August 19, 2005 at a Calais nursing home. Lloyd was born in Brooks, April 16, 1922, son of the late Burton and Hattie (Work) Gibbs. He attended schools in Brooks and graduated from Morse Memorial High School in 1941. Lloyd is a veteran of WWII, serving as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, and a recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was employed by St. Croix Paper Company and Georgia Pacific as a Head Loader for 39 years, retiring in August 1984. On December 22, 1945, he married Bethal “Betty” Leighton in Baileyville. Lloyd was a member of Peoples United Methodist Church in Baileyville, Past Master of Lewy’s Island Lodge #138 AF & AM, Georgia Pacific Quarter Century Club, and William T. Wren Post #23 American Legion in Baileyville. He enjoyed traveling and camping in his motor home and in earlier years enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, gardening, and cutting his own fire wood. Lloyd was predeceased by three brothers, Melroy, Kenneth, and Arnold Gibbs, and two sisters, Thelma Hall and Luccile Hennessey. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Betty; a sister, Lorraine Gray and husband George of Peabody, MA; Robert Flood of Baileyville who he was like a father to; Justin and Kaitlyn Flood, who he was like a grandfather to; a special niece, Theona Stubbs of Monroe; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews; and his feline friend, Bonkers. Graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lloyd’s memory may be made to PAWS, PO Box 182, Calais, ME 04619 or Peoples United Methodist Church, 20 Third Ave., Baileyville, ME 04694.
