Lillian B.
McLaughlin
October 15, 1939 – April 28, 2026
Lillian B. Schoppee died April 28th, 2026 at her home she has shared with her niece, Mary Knapp Young and husband Ray for the last five years. Lillian was born in Cherryfield, the daughter of Harold E. Schoppee and Maud Beatrice (Tracy) Schoppee .
On August 27th, 1965 she married Royce McLaughlin, the person she often referred to as “the love of her life” . Over the next 34 years Lillian and Royce spent many happy times together, finding great joy in the numerous camping trips they went on, time spent at Old Orchard Beach when they lived in Portland and the visits from their nieces and nephews when they lived in Whiting, the place where they retired: Lillian from the Lubec Medical Center where she worked as a housekeeper and Royce from the State of Maine where he was a park ranger at Cobscook State Park. Sadly Royce passed away in 1999 when he was only 64 years old. Lillian lived on her own for several years following his death, eventually moving into Narraguagus Estates for five years before moving in with her niece and loving caregiver, Mary.
Lillian, who was known as “Sissy” by many, was a quiet person with an unforgettable smile and a gentle spirit, which was often on display during family dinners with Dara, Heather, Steven and all their children…grandchildren she loved and protected as if they were her own. When the younger ones stayed over, she needed to know they were all tucked in to bed before she retired for the night and she looked forward to spending time with them in the morning when they got up. These special moments were her bliss.
Though she wasn’t a social butterfly, it seemed that everyone in town knew her or knew of her, from the hours she spent in the store, Back In The Good Old Days, and the countless adventures she went on with Mary. They were always seen together, out and about, running errands or simply enjoying a ride on a sunny day and sometimes, when they were parked, Sissy would roll down the window to converse with folks. She will always be remembered as a beloved part of the community and will be greatly missed.
Special thanks go out to Gayle Corliss who spent countless hours with Sissy over the years as a dear friend and caregiver. Her devotion to her was a true gift that will always be deeply appreciated by the family. Thank you to Debbie Cunningham for providing care during these past several weeks and to everyone that has spent time with Sissy when she could not be alone. Thank you for your kindness.
Lillian was pre-deceased by her parents, her brothers, Harold and Eugene, and her sister, Gloria.
Arrangements are by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
