Obituary

Leslie Philip "Yogi" Howland, 73, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, March 10, 2025, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. Born in Harvey, New Brunswick, on September 20, 1951, to Ronald "Squint" Howland Sr. and the late Joyce "Tot" (Eales) Howland, Leslie's life was a testament to resilience, service, and love for the great outdoors. As a young student at Lee Academy, Leslie embarked on what would become a fulfilling career with the railroad. His hard work and dedication saw him become a freight and yard clerk, where he served diligently for over two decades. After his retirement, Leslie found joy in working seasonally with DiCenzo's as a laborer and flagger. He was a proud veteran of the Maine Army National Guard, a member of the American Legion in Vanceboro, and a Master Mason with Lewey's Island Lodge #138 in Princeton and St. Croix Lodge #45 A.F. & A.M. Leslie's love for life extended beyond his professional endeavors. As an avid outdoorsman, he cherished hunting, fishing, and maintaining his impeccable lawn. His fondness for westerns was unrivaled, often reminiscing about his favorite scenes with an unmatched enthusiasm. On March 20, 1976, Leslie married the love of his life, Margaret Culleton, marking the beginning of a journey filled with shared dreams, laughter, and unwavering love. Their union was a testament to enduring companionship and mutual respect. In addition to his parents, Yogi was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Howland Jr., a sister Louise Howland, and brothers-in-law Jim and Terry Culleton. Surviving are his beloved wife of 48 years, Margaret Howland; two daughter, Laurie Niles and companion Mark Soctomah of Indian Township, and Susan Giles and husband Brian of Alexander; three grandchildren, Katlyn Niles and companion Justin Rollins of Old Town, and Madeline and Arlo Giles of Alexander; three great-grandchildren, Aubrie, Robert, and Maddison Worster; three sisters, Frannie Scott of McAdam, NB, Barbara Mason of McAdam, NB, and Connie Featherson and husband Wayne of Machias; sisters-in-law, Nancy Culleton of St. Stephen, NB, and Linda Culleton of Baileyville; nieces and nephews, Jamie, Cory, Cindi, Kelly, Christina, Jason, Mary, and Joanne; and many cousins. A Celebration of Yogi's Life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Vanceboro Community Center, 101 High St., Vanceboro.
