It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leon Joseph Sockbeson Sr., 70, who departed this world on the 9th of April, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on the 19th of December, 1955 in Eastport, Leon was the cherished son of Ronald Sockbeson and Mary Jane (Lola) Carroll. His life was a rich tapestry of service, commitment, and an unwavering love for his community and heritage.
Leon was an individual of many talents and dedicated his life to his community. After attending school in Eastport, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as an aircraft mechanic and gunner. Upon his return to his cherished Pleasant Point, he took on several roles with a spirit of service that was truly commendable. He worked as a police officer, ambulance personnel, and ultimately found his calling at the Pleasant Point Health Center as an environmental health technician. His fluency in the Passamaquoddy Language often led him to cover receptionist duties, a role he performed with grace and a sense of pride in his heritage. Leon was an active member of his community and served on the water and housing committees. His service extended to the United Veterans Honor Guard of Washington County and the V.F.W. When he wasn't serving his community, Leon could be found cheering on the Red Sox, strumming his guitar, or singing a song. Yet, above all these, it was family that held the dearest place in his heart.
Leon leaves behind a legacy of love and service. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Anna (Smith) Sockbeson; his children, Sarah Alley and husband Jeremy, Leon Sockbeson II and husband Tim, and Christopher Sockbeson; stepchildren, Taja Sencabaugh and husband Scott, and Lori Hildebran; grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Nipayapon, Joseph and Jared; step grandchildren, Randi, Ryley, Ian, Evan, Isa, and Isaak; great-granddaughter, Seraphine; step great-grandchildren, Jack, Avi, Pierce, Harper, Kaylen, Alice, and Emersyn; his siblings, Debora Newell, Earl Carroll Jr. and wife Gail, Angelina Robichaud, Cheryl MacPherson, Timothy Carroll and wife Pam, Kathy Odiorne and husband Christopher, Mary "Jackie" Lola, Lori Lola Keezer, Cheryl Cruz and husband Nelson, Ronette Sockbeson, and Keith Sylvia and husband Marc; special nephew Larry Robichaud; special niece Jodi and "his girls", Mercedes, Willow, and Taylorae: several nieces, nephews, and friends, including special friends Alice, Shorty, Max, and Zelda.
