Obituary

With a profound sense of loss and deep respect, we announce the passing of Kenneth "Bird Dog" Poynter, 70, on April 20, 2026. Born on August 19, 1955, in Eastport, Ken lived a life filled with passion for the environment, love for his community, and devotion to his family. His spirit, embodied by his captivating storytelling and infectious laughter, will continue to live in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Ken's life was marked by his dedication to his studies and his work in environmental conservation. After his graduation from Lake Region High School in Naples, ME, he pursued his Bachelor's of Science degree in Wildlife Biology at the University of Maine at Farmington. This was followed by a Master's degree in Environmental Economics from New Hampshire University. His passion led him to work with the Passamaquoddy Forestry Department at Indian Township and later for the Penobscot Tribe at Indian Island. Bird Dog then moved to Broomfield, Colorado, where he served as the Executive Director for the Native American Fish & Wildlife Society. Upon his retirement, he returned home to Pleasant Point to care for his mother, exemplifying his selflessness and love for family. He continued to serve his community as the Lt. Governor at Pleasant Point and later as the Tribal Manager, and on the board for the Passamaquoddy Water District. Bird Dog loved the outdoors and was often found fishing, hunting, or riding the open roads on his Harley with his brothers of the High Plains Drifters. His love for life was contagious and reflected in his relationships. Ken leaves behind his son, Zachary Piper-Poynter; granddaughter Pamela Poynter-Piirainen; sisters, Judy Poynter Pope and husband Pete, and Randi Roderick-Williams and husband Kevin; many nieces and nephews; special cousins who he affectionately referred to as his "aunties"; special friends Jackie, Erin, Roland, Joe, Bob, and Rhonda; his brothers with the High Plains Drifters; and his faithful canine companion Toto. He is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Poynter, his mother Grace (Stacker) Roderick; a son Jacob Poynter; and a sister Margaret Poynter Newth. Visitation will begin 10 a.m. Sunday, April 26, 2026 at the home of Hilda Lewis, 7 Soctomah Lane, Pleasant Point, until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 28. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, at St. Joseph Church, 51 Washington St., Eastport. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Bird Dog's life was a testament to the power of dedication, compassion, and love. His memory will forever be a comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
