Obituary

John Earl Knowles Sr., 62, a man of deep passion and unwavering spirit, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. Born on June 5, 1962, in Calais, to Merle Knowles Sr. and Jean (McLaughlin) Knowles, John was a beacon of joy, good humor, and warmth. As a graduate of Calais High School Class of 1980, John's industrious nature led him to a fulfilling career as an oiler and mechanic with Georgia Pacific, a position he held for 36 years. As much as he loved his profession, John had a heart that belonged to the great outdoors, finding solace and joy in fishing, hunting, 4-wheeling, and gardening. John's zest for life was evident in his diverse interests. His passion for motorcycles, particularly his cherished Indians, was infectious, lighting up his eyes whenever he spoke about them. John was a gun enthusiast and a connoisseur of classic cars. His pontoon boat rides were often the highlight of his day. Above all, John will be remembered for his ability to make everyone feel like family, his captivating storytelling, his witting personality, his humorous one-liners, and his radiant presence that could light up any room. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Leslie Knowles Sr.; and a nephew, Leslie Knowles II. Surviving are his companion and life partner of 18 years, Becky Perkins; five children, John Knowles Jr. and wife Kristina of Hermon, Justina Gidney and husband Zaccheriah of Lebanon, Adam Knowles and companion Hannah Lane of Nashville, TN, Ashley Connolly and husband Douglas of Hermon, and Elaine Perkins and fiancé John Johnson of Alexander; nine grandchildren, Cayson, Aleigh, and Ivy Knowles, Haileigh and Masen Gidney, Isla Knowles, Aiden and Owen Connolly, and John Johnson Jr.; brother Merle Knowles Jr. and wife Ruth of Alexander; special nephew Andy Knowles; special niece Betty Jean Wallace and husband Joey, and their children Lesliann Barnard and husband Mike, and Josie James and husband Nathan; and niece and nephews, Beckery Knowles, Merle Knowles III, Stephen Knowles, and Mark Knowles.
