Joan Jessie Brickett, a loving, talented and creative soul, passed away surrounded by family on August 30, 2025, at Calais Community Hospital. Joan was born on July 16, 1929, in Worcester, Massachusetts. She spent the past 10 years living in Calais , Maine, touching the lives of many with her warm personality and loving nature. Joan's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and the ability to transform even the simplest things into works of art. Her radiant smile and infectious laughter will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A devoted homemaker, Joan's home was always filled with the aroma of something good in the oven, the sound of laughter, and the sight of her beautiful artwork. She had a knack for making everyone feel at home. Her love for art was profound; she found joy and peace in creating beautiful pieces that were a reflection of her vibrant spirit. Joan's creativity extended beyond her art; she was known for her imaginative storytelling that would captivate anyone who listened. A voracious reader, Joan had an insatiable curiosity about the world around her, which she satisfied through her books. Her gardens were riots of color and of abundance.
Joan was a pillar of support for her family and friends. She often put the needs of others before her own, and her kindness was a beacon of hope for many. She was predeceased by her father Cecil Sandy and mother Jessie Fogg Sandy; her beloved husband of 64 years Sherman Brickett; three brothers, George, Gilbert, and Cecil Sandy; and one sister, Catherine Nickerson. She is survived by her daughter Martha Brickett and husband Paul Critchley of Robbinston Maine, son Ben Brickett and his wife Debbie of Eliot, Maine and daughter Sabra Powers of Kittery, Maine. Joan was the grandmother of 6 incredible grandchildren and 11 precious (and lively) great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Payton of CA, and Florence Pickens of MA; and one brother, James Sandy of CA. She leaves behind many wonderful friends whom she loved dearly.
