Obituary

Jessica Mae Burby, a beloved member of the Passamaquoddy community, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, at the age of 87. She was born on April 24, 1939, in Calais, Maine, and spent her formative years in the close-knit village of Sipayik. Jessica lived a life rich in culture and heritage, proudly embracing her identity as a Passamaquoddy woman, fluent in her native language.

Jessica had a deep love for the ocean and found joy sitting in the wild surf at the beach, where she felt most at home among the waves. Her dedication to environmental protection shone through her work as an inspector for the State of Connecticut's Environmental Protection Department, where she made a lasting impact.

She is predeceased by her parents, Margaret M. Socoby and Anthony J. Mitchell; her sisters, Priscilla Bassett, Georgia Mitchell, and Sheila Houle; and her son, Garry W. Burby. Jessica is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Judith Byram-Wright (husband Murray Wright); her son, Glenn Christopher Burby; daughter-in-law Ave Martella; and her cherished grandchildren, Jeremy Byram (wife Melissa Byram), Chaylyn Bryam, Colby Bryam, Brett Sapiel, Teigyn Gary Sapiel, Taijren Margaret Sapiel, Duran Burby, and Gianina Rodrigue; and her beloved brother, Dale Mitchell (wife Brenda Moore Mitchell). Jessica leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss her presence dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you-Woliwon-to all family and friends who have offered their unwavering support during her later years. A celebration of Jessica's extraordinary life will be held in August, with the date to be determined. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring her legacy, sharing stories, and cherishing the warmth of her spirit.

Jessica Mae Burby will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared at www.MaysFuneralHome.com
