Jerald "Butch" Garriott, 88, passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at Togus VA hospital. Born in Elk City, Kansas, on August 24, 1937, to Wayne and Lois (Jones) Garriott, Butch grew up to be a resilient and ambitious man. Known for his charismatic personality and indomitable spirit, Butch was a beacon of light and strength for those around him.
A proud graduate of Coffeeville High School, Class of 1955, Jerald enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired after 20 years of dedicated service as a DCCS E-8. In a career marked by high honor and respect, Butch served on the Honor Detail for President John F. Kennedy, President Herbert Hoover, and General Douglas MacArthur. After retiring in 1975, he moved to Robbinston, Maine, where he delved into the study of electricity at Washington County Vocational Technical Institute while also working in the woods. In 1977, he embarked on his second career as a Staking Engineer with Eastern Maine Electrical Coop, retiring in 2001 after 24 years of service. Butch was a member of the American Legion and the Lion's Club. An avid golfer, sports enthusiast, and traveler, Butch's zest for life was truly inspirational.
In addition to his parents, Butch was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Jane (Bishop) Garriott; his second wife, Rena (Scribner) Sherlock Garriott; sisters Beverly Trissel and Lorna Hudson; and a brother Darrell Garriott. Surviving are his three children, Kim Sermersheim and husband John of Perry, ME, Jerald Garriott and wife Monica of North Wildwood, NJ, and Robin Bouchard and husband John of Robbinston, ME; five grandchildren, Jessica Welsh of Robbinston, Amanda Sermersheim and companion Ralph Pineo of East Machias; J.W. Garriott of Cape May, NJ, Chris Garriott and wife Gina of Pitman, NJ, and Kayla Ledvina and husband Zach of Highlands Ranch, CO; four great-grandchildren, Leilani, Violet, Benjamin, and Brooks; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Butch is also survived by several members of the Sherlock family, including stepchildren David Sherlock and wife Elizabeth of Gray, ME, Linda Sherlock of Groveland, MA, and Stephen Sherlock and wife Terry of Westfield, NB; and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring of 2026 at the Brewer Cemetery in Robbinston.
