Jeffrey Wayne Pratt, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend passed away
May 6, 2025, at Calais Hospital surrounded by family and friends.
Whether tracking through the woods on a crisp autumn morning, casting a line into the water or spinning a tale that captivated listeners, Jeff lived with passion and doing all things his way.
Jeff's words carried laughter, wisdom and the kind of magic that brought people together. Never did anyone stop by the house that they did not leave with a smile, a laugh and a story or two. Jeff loved to share his tales of hunting, fishing, and time in the woods. He mentored many of his nephews and friends, young and old, to the ways of the Maine woods, whether taking them out as an official Maine Guide or just sharing his time teaching them to hunt, fish, ice-fish, run a chainsaw or to train hunting dogs. Jeff was a Master Maine Guide and also employed by the Public Works Dept. with the Town of Baileyville.
Jeff was well known and respected for his Tanbark Kennels. For 30 years, Jeff bred Gordon Setters with his focus on excellence and refinement to improve the Gordon breed that were sought after by enthusiasts and hunters alike for their remarkable skill as bird dogs. Jeff was very involved in field trials with many trips coming home with blue ribbons. When not a participant Jeff was a judge at the trials, taking time to help the younger participants with the techniques they might want to try.
Driving for hours, Jeff would take long drives with whomever would join him riding the back roads of Washington County. He loved the smell of riding through a fresh cut logging yard. Jeff would drive looking for signs or any animal that moved, pointing out deer, moose, partridge, bear and always wanted to see what was around the next corner.
One of the things Jeff loved most was to gather family and friends together and have cookouts at his camp. He was so proud of the camp that he built himself with his own chainsaw. After selling it, he immediately made friends with the new owners. Wherever Jeff went he made friends from every walk of life all across the US. He had enormous respect for veterans and his compassion for his friends ran deep.
Jeffrey was born in Calais, ME on May 24, 1953, to parents of William Hayes and Harriet Joyce Pratt, both deceased. He is survived by his wife of 25 years Martha (Reardon) Pratt, daughter Stacy (Trung) Ly and three grandchildren Jocelyn, Quinn, and Stella. He had two stepsons, Jason (Kate) Bartlett and Jeffrey Bartlett along with step grandchildren Jack and Adler.
Jeff is also survived by brothers Terry (Peggy), Scott (Jan) and like a brother Elwood (Vicki) Pratt, as well as an uncle, aunts, nieces, nephews, and two very special friends that meant the world to Jeff, Noah Southard and Traci St.Clair.
To those who knew and loved Jeff, his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but in every rustling leaf, every rippling stream, and every tale passed down through generations, his spirit lives on.
The family will have a private service this summer. In memory of Jeffrey, donations may be made to the American Legion Post 23, 98 Main St. Baileyville, ME 04694. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.MaysFuneralHome.com
