Jean Gertrude Wood

June 3, 1928 — October 5, 2021

Calais - Jean Gertrude Wood, 93, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at her home with her children by her side. Jean was born in Calais on June 3, 1928, daughter of Erlen and Jennie (Clark) Porter, Sr. and resided in Milltown, ME for most of her life.

Jean grew up on the pristine shores of her beloved Howard Lake, where she was surrounded by an extensive and supportive family.

Jean graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1946, and then earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the Washington State Normal School in Machias. 1949 proved to be a fond year, as she began her career in education as a first grade teacher at the Calais Grade School and married the love of her life, John “Jack” Wood. Ahead of her time, she became a teaching Principal at the Milltown Grammar School, and eventually the Principal of Calais Elementary School. Jean was a kind, dedicated, and meticulous educator and, after 40 years in the school system, she retired in 1989 to enjoy her true loves; family, traveling the country, and relaxing at Howard Lake.

“The Lake” always proved to be the centerpiece of life in Downeast Maine, where countless family celebrations, church gatherings, and friendly reunions took place every summer.

Jean was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Calais, the church’s Ladies Goodwill Club, Maine Teacher’s Association, and the Washington County Retired Teacher’s Association.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband John; and a brother Erlen Porter, Jr. and wife Carol. Surviving are her two children, John Wood of Calais, and Regina Taylor and husband George of Calais; her cherished grandson Chris Taylor of Indianapolis, IN; and three nephews, Ronald Porter of Charlotte, Jim Porter and wife Theresa of Calais, and Wayne Porter and wife Tamia of Rollinsford, NH; and a special cousin Joan Shay Harrington and husband Earl of Long Meadow, MA.
