Obituary for Jean M. Newell (Doten)

Calais- Jean Doten Newell, passed away at home with her family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer, on July 16, 2016, in Calais, at the age of 72. Jean was born in Calais to Otis and Annie (Cornish) Doten on February 5, 1944.

Jean is predeceased by her parents, Otis and Annie Doten, one son, Bruce Newell, and a great-granddaughter Brianna Barnard-Newell. She is survived by her brother, Carlton "Bim" and his wife Deanie Doten of Florida, sisters Elaine Perkins and Irene Gallway of Calais; her sons, Wayne Newell of Lincoln, Dale and his wife Kimberly Newell of Mapleton, and Shawn Newell and fiancé Matthew Nadeau of Fort Fairfield. Her grandchildren Felicia Newell, Tanika Newell, and Nicholas Newell. Several nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.

Jean owned and operated Down East Pizza in Calais for nearly 40 years. It was a local icon where she spent years serving her customers. When she became sick and closed Down East Pizza permanently, she often spoke of her customers and the friendships she gained from working in the restaurant. She truly missed her patrons.

During her battle with cancer, many friends and family gave up their time to assist her with appointments, travel, and other needs. Her family truly is forever grateful for all those who offered their time and help to her. We will never forget and never be able to thank those who were by her side until the end. To her sister, Irene, you are more than her sister and our aunt. You stood by her in her time of need and supported her through to the end. To Jackie Lyons Page, you have been our sister through all of the years. You gave up day after day to be by her side and to support her. She will always be your second mother and our sister. To Brenda Blanchard, you were always called her angel. Your friendship and support for her will forever be appreciated and in our memories. Thank you will never be enough but know that our love for you and to our mother is forever indebted.

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais.
