It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James A. Sherman, who left us on December 6, 2025, at the age of 77. James was born to Merrill and Helen (Toma) Sherman on November 21, 1948, in Hartford, Connecticut. He carried the values of his upbringing throughout his life, touching many hearts with his warmth, strength of character, and enduring spirit.
James was a pillar of wisdom and support for his family. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1967, then pursued a bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Hartford. Following his graduation, James married his high school sweetheart, Celeste Sanborn, on June 5, 1971. Their story was a testament to unwavering love. After enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard and serving in Baltimore, MD, James began his long-standing career with Hartford Insurance Company. His work ethic and dedication were hallmarks of his character, and he retired as a respected Claims Specialist. James and Celeste moved to Machiasport, Maine, fulfilling his lifelong dream of living by the ocean.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim's love for music was evident as he played the guitar and dulcimer with then Chantey group, From Away Down East. He was also a member of the Machiasport Historical Society, serving as a docent on Friday afternoons in the summer. Crossword puzzles, reading, and relaxing by the ocean were favorite past times. James lived his life to the fullest, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. His legacy of love and dedication will live on through his wife of 54 years, Celeste Sherman; their daughter Addie Boyett and husband Floyd of Amity; daughter-in-law Jill Sherman of West Chester, PA; grandchildren, Skylar and Bode Sherman, and Lucas Boyett; brother Robert Sherman and wife Brenda of Clinton, CT; and several nieces and nephews.
James was predeceased by his parents, Merrill and Helen Sherman, his son, Nathan Merrill Sherman, and his sister, Patricia Sanden. His memory will forever remain in our hearts. A celebration of James' life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
We invite everyone whose lives were touched by James to share their memories and upload photos to his memorial page at www.MaysFuneralHome.com. In this way, we can all celebrate and honor the life of James A. Sherman, a remarkable man who leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and kindness.
