Obituary

James M. Doten, a cherished member of the Baring community, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by love in his home. Born on April 17, 1941, in Baring, he was the beloved son of Albion and Elizabeth (Johnson) Doten.

Jim, a proud graduate of the Calais Memorial High School Class of 1959, was united in marriage to his devoted wife, Sally Moreshead, on July 27, 1961. Their partnership flourished over 65 years, during which they built a life rich in love and family. Jim dedicated many years of service to the Calais School District, working as a custodian and maintenance worker. His unwavering spirit and kind heart were evident in every aspect of his life, especially in his active involvement with the Second Baptist Church in Calais, where he served faithfully as a Trustee and Deacon.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim's passion for hunting, fishing, and trapping reflected his deep appreciation for nature. Yet, more than any hobby, it was his family that filled Jim's heart with profound joy and purpose. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will be cherished by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister June. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Doten; three children, Jeffrey Doten and wife Stacey of Kennebunk, Beth Small of Calais, and Carol Marden of Winter Harbor; seven grandchildren, Patrick, Alex, Jamie, Dale, Ashley, Shannon, and Cooper; nine great-grandchildren; his siblings, Dennis Doten and wife Rhonda, Donald Doten and wife Shari, and Judy Keene and husband Richard; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the Second Baptist Church, 21 Church St., Calais. Following the service, Jim will be laid to rest in the tranquil Baring Cemetery, a place that he cherished. The family invites all who were touched by Jim's life to share their memories, photos, and condolences in remembrance of a truly remarkable man.
