Iris Jessie Brown, aged 95, departed this life on Friday, February 14, 2025. Born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, on November 8, 1929, to Ernest and Josephine (Wormell) Russell, Iris was a beacon of love, strength, and indomitable spirit. Her life was a tapestry of meaningful relationships, cherished memories, and admirable accomplishments. She was a proud graduate of St. Stephen High School, Class of 1946, and brought her sense of dedication and commitment to her role as a telephone operator for the New Brunswick Telephone Company. On December 27, 1951, Iris embarked on a beautiful journey of love and companionship when she married her soulmate, Carleton Brown. The couple's adventure took them to Maryland, where Carleton served in the U.S. Army, before finally settling in Orono, Maine. Here, Iris' outgoing and vivacious nature found a home in The Thursday Club and the Faculty Wives Club at the University of Maine. After Carleton's retirement, the couple laid down roots in Baileyville, where Iris continued to serve her community as a faithful member of People's United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Iris' zest for life was evident in her love for gardening, cooking, bird watching, and her passion for traveling the world. Iris was preceded in death by her beloved Carleton, who passed away on February 11, 2025, their son, Stephen Brown, her brother, Colin Russell, and her sister Pauline "Polly" Trafton. She is survived by her two loving sons, Russell Brown and wife Carrie of Baileyville, and Jeffrey Brown and wife Catherine of Tempe, AZ; her four grandchildren - Samuel, Abigail, Stephen, and Madelyn; along with her nieces and nephews. Her son Russell and his wife Carrie made the loving commitment to ensure that Iris and Carleton could remain in their family home during their final years, a promise that they fulfilled with utmost devotion. A Celebration of Life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2025, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.
