Herbert J. Melanson Sr.

Herbert Joseph Melanson Sr., 86, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2024.   Herbert was born in Concession, Nova Scotia on July 11, 1937, son of Rene and Josephine (Gaudet) Melanson.

 

Herbert was raised in Concession, Nova Scotia, and at a young age started working on local farms.  When he was old enough, he moved to Maine to work with his father in the woods.   Herbert started his own logging company, H.J. Melanson & Son, and later in life hauled gravel.  He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching wrestling, baseball, especially the Red Sox, basketball, and loved attending sporting events of his children and grandchildren.  Herbert will be remembered as a great man who fiercely loved his family and was so proud of his children and grandchildren.

 

In addition to his parents, Rene and Josephine Melanson, Herbert was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte (James) Melanson; sister Leah Durphy; and his two brothers, Dennis and Albert Melanson.  Surviving are his six children, Jeannie Ferry and husband Robert of Princeton, Laurie Greenlaw and husband James of Grove City, OH, Renee O’Neill and fiancé Peter Cordner of Farmington, Wendy Melanson and companion John Shute of Princeton, Herbert Melanson Jr. and wife Alison of Orono, and Holly Melanson and companion Gilbert Mattheson of Dennysville; nine grandchildren, Robert Ferry Jr and wife Jessica, Melissa Greenlaw, Matthew Greenlaw, Michelle Ripley and husband Carl III, Nathan O’Neill and wife Ava, Jeffrey Jones and wife Chelsey, Lauren Melanson, Christopher Plissey and fiancé Brooke Brehaut, and Andrew Melanson; nine great-grandchildren, Austin and Brooklyn Ferry, Jameson and Maverick Stamper, Sophia and Avery Ripley, Theodore “Teddy” and Quinn O’Neill, Bella Lynn Jones, and was looking forward to the birth of   his 10th great-grandchild in September; two sisters, Annette Melanson of Toquerville, UT, and Betty Monk and husband Greg of Princeton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim Durphy, Arlene and Imon Roussel, and Beulah and John Lane; and many nieces and nephews.

 

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Princeton Cemetery, West St., Princeton.  Donations in Herbert’s memory may be made to the Kenneth Murphy Jr. Memorial Fund at any Bangor Savings branch, or mail to Kenneth Murphy Jr. Memorial Fund, PO Box 474, Calais, ME 04619, or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692 (www.heart.org) Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
