Hazel Marie
McKeown
December 13, 1952 – May 20, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hazel Marie McKeown, 73, who departed this life on May 20, 2026, in Brewer. Born on December 13, 1952, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Marie was the beloved daughter of Raymond and Mary (Eagan) Dougherty.
After graduating from St. Stephen High School in 1973, she married her beloved husband, David "Fuzzy" McKeown. Marie's compassionate spirit led her to a fulfilling career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, where she spent many years at Barnard's Nursing Home in Calais and then with Calais Community Hospital until her retirement.
Marie was known for her adventurous spirit, enjoying many journeys on the road with Fuzzy during his trucking days. Her love for animals was evident in her care for them, ensuring they enjoyed happy and fulfilled lives. However, the heart of Marie's world was always her family, with whom she shared unending love and warmth.
In addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by her husband, David, and her brother Raymond Dougherty Jr. She is survived by her two children, Niesje McKeown of Baileyville, ME, and Michael McKeown of Calais, ME, along with her cherished grandson, James McKeown. Marie is also lovingly remembered by her sister Suzanne Daigle and her husband, Jeff, of Barter Settlement, NB; sister-in-law Sally Dougherty of Mayfield, NB; and her nieces and nephews, including Amanda Sewell and her husband Shawn, Tonya Dougherty and her husband Ronnie, Randy Daigle and his companion Starr, and her special niece Holli Santerre, who provided invaluable support during Marie's final days. Additionally, Marie is survived by her grandnieces and grandnephews, Hannah, Matthew, Ellie, Myla, Shaylee, Mikaila, and Jacob, as well as her adored feline companion, Fenway.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Helen, Nancy, Ali, and Chaplain Steve with Constellation Hospice Services, and the staff at Brewer Rehab, for their exceptional care and compassion shown towards Hazel and her family during her final days.
A private graveside service will be held at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Friends and family are invited to visit www.MaysFuneralHome.com to share condolences and treasured memories of Marie, as we come together to remember a truly remarkable woman whose love and compassion touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
