Obituary

Hattie M. Moffatt passed away at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on January 18, 2025, at the age of 97. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on May 20, 1927, to John and Catheryn (Hill) Sutherland, Hattie embodied the spirit of her birthplace throughout her life. Her journey from her homeland to the United States in 1956 was a testament to her adventurous spirit and determination. Although she initially settled in Massachusetts, it was Calais, Maine, where she truly made a home for herself and her family. Hattie's engaging charm and warm spirit were best showcased during her years as a waitress for the Wickachee Restaurant in Calais. She was much more than just a waitress; she was a storyteller, a confidante, and a friend to all who walked through the restaurant's doors. Her unwavering faith was reflected in her active involvement with the Calais United Methodist Church. Despite her busy life, Hattie always found peace in gardening, unraveling word searches, engrossing herself in books, and walking along the serene waterfront. Even though Hattie was predeceased by all of her siblings, she was the matriarch of an expansive and loving family. The legacy of her love and wisdom is carried forward by her sons, David Moffatt and wife Lois of Sanford, Morris Moffatt and wife Bonnie of Calais, Russell Moffatt and wife Ginny of Meddybemps; her seven grandchildren, Deborah Moffatt, Laura Brown, John Pike, Kathy Pike, Artie Pike, Leslie Moffatt, and Jamie Moffatt; and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Each of them is a testament to Hattie's enduring love, and they will continue to honor her spirit in their lives. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
