Obituary

Gordon Gilbert Ganong, 88, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Avita of Brunswick. Born on September 5, 1936, in Pembroke, Maine to Burpee and Ella (Crawford) Ganong. Gordon's life was characterized by hard work, service, and love for his family and community. He returned to his beloved hometown after serving as an engineer in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the USS Coos Bay stationed in Portland, demonstrating the same dedication and courage in his service to the country as he did in every other aspect of his life. On November 22, 1956, Gordon married the love of his life, Jennie Johnson, marking the beginning of a love story that would span nearly seven decades. Together, they built a life grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and endless love. They took over the family farm and successfully ran Ganong Poultry Farm for over 30 years, as well as Ganong Trucking for over 20 years. Gordon's entrepreneurial spirit, combined with Jennie's unwavering support, led to a prosperous business that served the community they loved. Gordon also devoted his time to public service, serving as Assistant Chief for the Pembroke Fire Department, a Town tax assessor, and co-founder and coach of the Pembroke Mets, the town's first Little League team. Gordon's life was not solely defined by his work, though his dedication was remarkable. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, like hiking through the beautiful Maine landscape, cross-country skiing in the winter, and traveling to new places. But above all, it was the time spent with family that he cherished the most. Gordon is survived by his beloved wife Jennie Ganong; four children, Julie Ganong and husband Alan Mons of Byfield, MA, Gordon Ganong of Windham, Brian Ganong and wife Margaret of Lisbon Falls, and Craig Ganong of Clearwater, FL; nine surviving grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by nephews, Howard W. Johnson and Rowland Johnson of Eastport. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Burpee and Ella, and a grandson, Justin Rose Ganong; and his favorite brother-in-law, Howard V. Johnson. Gordon's life was a beautiful journey that touched many hearts. We invite you to share your memories, stories, and photos of Gordon on his memorial page at www.MaysFuneralHome.com.
