Gloria Richard Lanigan (Gibouleau)

May 25, 1924 — June 12, 2020

Baileyville – Gloria Rita Richard Leland Lanigan, 96, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020 at Bangor Nursing & Rehab. Gloria was born in Bridgeport, CT on May 25, 1924, daughter of Eugene and Marion (Wheway) Gibouleau.

Gloria grew up in Devaun, CT. After graduating from high school, she went on to earn her B.S. Degree from Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing. Gloria completed her last six months as an Army Cadet nurse at Fort Devens in Massachusetts where she met the love of her life, Marty Richard. On September 2, 1947, they were united in marriage in Baileyville. Together they had four children. Gloria’s love for her children was immeasurable. After her husband Marty passed away at a very young age, she was left to raise them on her own. Gloria’s unconditional love and support for each of them was always foremost in all aspects of her life. She worked multiple jobs at the hospital, nurse at the mill for Georgia Pacific, night call-ins, among others while raising her young family. She was a mother beyond all mothers, showing unconditional love always.

Gloria’s interests included making quilts and hooking rugs, which she would do with such love, to be able to give to her children and grandchildren. She was a faithful Parishioner of St. James the Greater R.C. Church in Baileyville, which later became St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish. Gloria had great faith and was a devoted Catholic, spending countless hours reading her prayer books and saying the rosary.

She was a member of Curves for many years reaching every milestone she set. Curves was a very important part of her life and she so enjoyed her time spent with her many friends there. Two of her favorite places to spend time were on Meddybemps Lake and the Perry Shores. Gloria loved her family with great passion and nothing would make her happier than to have them all gather together. She loved all the laughter of her grandchildren through the years and so looked forward to each visit.

In addition to her parents, Gloria was predeceased by her beloved husband, Martin J. Richard; husbands Philip Leland and Lyle Lanigan; great-grandson, George Andrew Spino; brothers-in-law Leo Richard and Clifford “Kip” McLaughlin; and sisters-in-law Betty and Janet Richard.
