Obituary for Frederick Michael McLean Sr.

Calais – Frederick Michael McLean Sr., 75, passed away at home on Friday, March 8, 2019 with his loving wife by his side. Fred was born in New Bedford, MA on April 5, 1943, son of Michael Ralph and Ada (Westgate) McLean.

After graduating from Calais Memorial High School, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Luiseno ATF-156. Following his service, he returned to Calais and started his career with the papermill in Baileyville, where he worked for over 40 years. Fred also served in the Maine Army National Guard for 12 years. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club with Georgia Pacific, the Eagle’s Club in Bangor, and the Fred Mitchell Post #11 American Legion in Calais. Fred was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing softball and basketball in his younger years. He loved dancing and tinkering around his house.

In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by an infant son Michael; and a half-brother Don Costa. Surviving are his wife 26 years, Donna (Fairweather) McLean of Calais; two children, Frederick McLean Jr. and wife Melissa of Calais, and Penny Larsen and husband Rob of Woodstock; two step-children, Kim Sawyer and husband Brad of Pembroke, and Stacey Orr and husband Jim of St. Stephen, NB; eight grandchildren, Michael, Penny, Ida, Courtney, Miranda, Zach, Gabrielle and Ashton; five great-grandchildren, Lucien, Amelia, Bentley, Brianna and Charlotte; his sister Margaret Guitar of St. Stephen, NB; two brothers, Michael McLean of Tucson, AZ, and John McLean and wife Nora of Woonsocket, RI; many nieces and nephews; and his faithful canine companion Chloe.

A graveside service for Fred will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Calais Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
