With heavy hearts yet full of beautiful memories, we announce the passing of
Eleanor Lee Grant, 80, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left us on January 31, 2026, at Bella Point in Bridgton, Maine. She was born to Roland and Eola McCaleb on May 3, 1945, in Machias, Maine and grew up there with her five sisters, Helen, Jane, Thursa, Renee, and Martha, and her brother, Clifton.
Eleanor was a spunky soul whose sense of humor amused her family and friends
throughout her life. After graduating from high school, she married her sweetheart,
Winfield Grant, and they settled down in Hampden to raise their daughter, Heather.
Eleanor enjoyed spending time with her family and kids of all ages, frequently taking
Heather, her nieces, and neighborhood kids on various excursions, like swimming in
favorite watering holes in the summer and sledding down snowy hills in the winter. For
many years when her daughter was in school, Eleanor also cared for other children and
their home became a second home, at times, to several nieces and nephews. She was
very fond of animals and took in several cats over the years who needed a home. This
nurturing nature extended beyond her own home as she embarked on a rewarding
career as a CNA, touching countless lives with her kindness and compassion at
Westgate Manor in Bangor for over 20 years.
Eleanor found joy in the simple pleasures of life - shopping, dining out, and visiting Bar
Harbor and her family in Machias. For years she followed Heather's gymnastics meets
and recitals; enjoyed state fairs and harness horseracing; and loved decorating for and
celebrating Christmas. Above all, she cherished the moments spent with her
family, especially her beloved grandchildren.
Eleanor's radiant smile and loving spirit will be tremendously missed but forever
cherished by her surviving daughter, Heather Silverstein and husband Michael, her
grandchildren, Jacob, Taylor, and Allison Silverstein, and her great-grandson Jake. She
will also be remembered fondly by her sisters, Martha Dean and husband Charles, Jane
Jordan and husband Richard, and Renee Julian and husband Robert, along with
numerous nieces and nephews. Eleanor was reunited in death with her husband
Winfield, her infant daughter Heidi, her sisters Helen Gooch and Thursa Phillips, her
brother Clifton McCaleb, her nephews Bobby Mallar and Bobby Julian, and her parents
Roland and Eola McCaleb.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Eleanor's life will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11:00 am EST at
Mailey Hill Cemetery, Columbia, Maine. Arrangements are under the care of Mays
Funeral Home & Cremation Services. As we bid farewell to Eleanor, we invite you to
share your memories and photos of her on the memorial page at
www.MaysFuneralHome.com. Each shared memory will serve as a comfort and a
reminder of the love and joy Eleanor brought into our lives.
