Calais – Elaine Ross Carter, 91, passed away at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor on July 7, 2021. Elaine, the youngest of 9, was born in St. Stephen, NB on April 15, 1930, daughter of Bertram and Ethel (Cookson) Ross.
Elaine graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1947. She went on to the Madawaska Training School in Fort Kent and the University of Maine in Machias where she earned her degree in Education. On June 10, 1951, she married her love, Gerald D. Carter. Elaine taught elementary school at Brownville Elementary School and retired from Eliot Elementary School in 1977 with over 26 years of teaching.
Elaine was a member of Eliot Advent Christian Church, Maine Teacher’s Association, the Princeton Rod & Gun Club, and enjoyed gardening and spending time at the family camp on Big Lake, Princeton.
In addition to her parents, Elaine was predeceased by her husband Gerald D. Carter; three sisters, Beatrice Moffitt, Ruth Ross and Helen Pollard; and five brothers, Milton, Linwood, Lewis, Donald and Raymond. Surviving are her two children, Ruth Haynes and husband Mark of Jefferson, MA, and Elizabeth Carter of Calais; her granddaughter, Diana Haynes and husband Ernesto Duhart of London, England; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Monday, July 19th at 11:00AM at Calais Cemetery with Pastor Ernest Carle officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elaine’s memory may be made to the Princeton Public Library, PO Box 408, Princeton, ME 04668. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
