With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Doris Mae Chapman, a light in our lives and the heart of our family, who left us peacefully on September 4, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. Born in the serene landscapes of Indian Township on September 28, 1936, to loving parents Frank and Margaret Socoby, Doris was a steadfast beacon of resilience, love, and creativity. Her life's journey took her from the rugged terrain of Alaska to the bustling coasts of Connecticut and Massachusetts before returning to her beloved home in Maine, but her spirit remained unbound by geography.
Doris was a woman of many talents and myriad passions. She served her community as a dedicated EMT and later nourished the elders of Indian Township through her work as a cook at the Elder Meal Site. But perhaps her most recognized role was that of a master basket maker. Doris's exceptional skill and creative vision led to her membership in the Maine Basket Alliance, and her extraordinary creations found homes in museums, as well as in the collections of celebrities and politicians such as Willie Nelson, President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Gov. Janet Mills. Yet, her talents didn't stop at basket weaving; Doris was also renowned for her delectable homemade donuts, her exquisite cake decorating skills, her charming pinecone wreaths, and her enduring enthusiasm for bingo.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Margaret Socoby; her second husband, David Chapman; great-grandson, Zackery Newell; two brothers, Joseph Socoby and James Mitchell, and her sisters, Mary Gabriel and Delia Mitchell. Mourning her loss are her four children, Richard Smiley, Gary Smiley and wife Michelle, Jeffery Smiley and wife Judith, and Linda Dana and husband Dale; twelve grandchildren, Keya, Daniel, Katie, Gary II, Kassey, Tia, Jeffery, Jade, Taylor, Twyla, and Jared Smiley, and Daniel Dana and wife Stephanie; 18 great-grandchildren, Linda, Steve, Nitap, Quoqsis, Lennox, Sakom, Petra, Aisha, Ali, Tatum, Alia, Jason, Layla, Lathan, Liam, Aubrey, Connor, and Paisley; a great-great granddaughter, Ivy Mae; her "other children", Gene Wayne Francis and wife Bernedette, and Betty Lewey and husband Sabattus; numerous Godchildren; special nephews Roger Ritter and Gordon Newell; special cousin Bernice Greeley; and many nieces, nephews, and treasured friends. Doris also leaves behind Chief William Nicholas Sr. and former Chief Robert Newell, who held special places in her heart.
Special thanks go out to the hospice and Calais Community Hospital, who provided exceptional care and comfort to Doris during her time of need. Their compassionate services ensured that her final days were spent in comfort and peace.
Visitation will begin 1 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025, at her home, 83 Hemlock Point Road, Indian Township, until 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Kevin Martin 10 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2025, at St. Ann Church, Peter Dana Point. Burial will follow in the Indian Township Tribal Cemetery.
