Donna D. Carter, 69, passed away with her son by her side after a short and very unexpected illness Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Donna was born in Calais on May 5, 1956, daughter of Louis and Grace (Leavitt) Soucie.
After her graduation from Calais Memorial High School, a new chapter of her life unfolded in Charleston, South Carolina, where she met a sailor, William Pope. Their paths intertwined, and they moved to Florida before eventually returning to Maine. Donna was not only a devoted homemaker but also a diligent student. Donna not only worked hard her entire life, but she also earned two associate degrees. Aside from her academic accomplishments, Donna was a lover of Stephen King novels, enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, and was a gifted crocheter and seamstress. She always worked hard and did her best to provide for her boys.
Donna is survived by her son, William Pope Jr. of Calais; her great-niece, Kim Hartford of St. Stephen, NB; and many close cousins and other family members. She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Grace Soucie, her son Shayne Pope, her first husband William Pope, her sister Jean Hartford, niece and nephews, Loria Ann, George, and Jeff Hartford, and a special cousins Edward Leavitt Sr. While mourning her loss, we find comfort in the thought that Shayne and Donna are together again and that William is still here to keep their memories alive.
In keeping with Donna's wishes, there will be no traditional funeral at this time. Arrangements are entrusted to Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. We invite you to share your condolences, memories, and photos of Donna at www.MaysFuneralHome.com. As we remember Donna, let's celebrate the incredible life she led and the impact she had on all of us.
