Donald L. Moore Sr.

Donald L. Moore Sr., 88, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 16, 2023, at his home in South Princeton with his family by his side.  Donald was born in Machiasport, ME on December 11, 1934, the son of Clarence and Christine (Berry) Moore.  He attended Machias Schools.

Donald served in the US Air Force from 1953-1957 where he spent time overseas in the Philippines, Japan, and Okinawa.  He is a proud member of the American Legion Post #23 in Baileyville, ME.  On August 1, 1958, Donald married Gretchen Maker in Machias, ME.

He worked at Pratt and Whitney and International Silver Company in Connecticut before returning to ME where he worked for Georgia Pacific in Baileyville, ME for 32 years before retiring in 2000.  Dad loved to hunt and fish, go camping, 4-wheeling, play cards, dice, pool, go for rides to look for deer, do crossword puzzles and spend time with his family.  He was a hard worker and a kind man who was always willing to help those in need.

Donald was predeceased by his wife of over 49 years; his father and mother; his father and mother in-laws; his grandson Ted MacArthur; his brother Clarence “Buddy” Moore; infant brother Norman; sisters Dorothy “Dot” Gardner, Florence Marie “Mickey” Sprague, Rebecca Kingsley, Hazel Hanson, and their spouses; sister Marguerite Preston; three nieces, a great-niece, three nephews; and sister and brother-in-law Valerie and Clyde Holmes.

He is survived by his children Randy Moore of South Princeton, Donnie Moore Jr of South Carolina, Rickey Moore and his wife Susan of NB, Canada, Danny Moore and his wife Dorothy of MD, Rene MacArthur and her husband Keith of South Princeton, ME, Dean Moore of Warren, ME, and Rebecca Carter and her husband Maxwell “Micki” of Baileyville, ME; brothers Bruce Moore and his wife Mildred, Horace “Hoppy” Moore and his wife Mary Lou, and William “Billy” Moore and his wife Terry, all of Machiasport, ME; his sister Norma Jean “Jeannie” Davis and her husband Robert of Cutler, ME; brother-in-law James Preston of Roques Bluff, ME; brother-in-law Greenleif “Namie” Maker and his wife Nancy of AL; brother-in-law Wayne Maker and wife Linda of Wesley, ME; grandchildren Donnie, Robbie, Ashley, Gregory, Patricia, Courtney, Kayla, Matthew, Danny, Christina, Danell, Keith Jr, Justin, and Cassandra; 31 great-grandchildren including his special great-granddaughter Gretchen; he also had a great-great granddaughter on the way; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

A Celebration of Donald’s Life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, August 6, 2023, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais.  Burial will follow in the Calais Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
