Obituary

Donald "Donnie" Cox, 68 of Baileyville, passed away after a long, undiagnosed illness, at home surrounded by family on March 21st, 2026. Donnie was the son of Cecil and Shirley Cox. They moved to Woodland Junction when Donnie was a young child and remained in his family home for the rest of his life. It was often joked that he was "The Mayor of the Junction"! Growing up, he had a mischievous streak until he met the love of his life. His blushing bride, Gayla, who lovingly called him her 'young punk', whom he married and spent 50 years together. Together, they welcomed Missy, Stevie, and Angel, then later adopted Kyler. He loved his family fiercely and always put them first, no matter how busy life got. Against all odds, Donnie became a self-made man, owning and operating Woodland Machine Works and Woodland Septic for 40+ years. He always took pride in his businesses and would tell people, "If I don't have it, then you don't need it." He worked extremely hard to provide for his family. Although he enjoyed his children, he enjoyed his grandchildren far more! His world revolved around all six grandchildren, Donnie, Brett, Delia, Kyler, Leo, and his 'favorite' Opal Lynnie. He also recently became a proud great-grandfather to Kameron Julie Cox. Donnie was very passionate about weightlifting and took pleasure in teaching others the sport's technique. He enjoyed going up to camp at Portage Lake and sitting at the Mayor's Bar. He also enjoyed fishing wherever he could, especially competing with his Daughter on the pontoon boat on West Grand Lake. In later years, Donnie relived his youth and enjoyed driving down memory lane in his classic vehicles, teaching his granddaughters how to drive. As well as time spent gambling at Hollywood Casino in Bangor with Todd and Sherry Hitchcock. Donnie also cared deeply for his community, doing many things behind the scenes without expecting any acknowledgement. He was most proud of working to create a park in the Junction, rallying the kids to help and working with the town of Baileyville to ensure there was a safe place for kids to play in the Junction. Donnie was survived by his loving wife, Gayla. Mother-in-law, Ada Boutot. Sons, Steven Cox, and partner Jessica. Kyler Cox and partner Tammara. Daughter Angel and Son-in-law Scott Yates. Grandchildren, Donnie Cox II and wife Cassidy, Brett Campbell, Delia Yates, Opal Yates and partner Addison, Kyler Cox Jr., and Leo Cox. His chosen granddaughter, Chelsie Case. Sister Linda and Brother-in-law Rodney Perkins. Nieces Wendy Dean and Stephanie Perkins. Nephews Corey Perkins, Terry Perkins, and Davie Dean. Donnie was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Shirley Cox, and his daughter, Missy Cox, whom he missed very much. Special uncle Clayton Cox, Brother, Steven Cox. Sister, Peggy Dean; Nephew, Jamie Dean; Father-in-law, Gary Corapi; and Brother-in-law, Jeff Corapi. As well as many special friends. Visiting hours will be held from 12:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M., with a service to follow on Sunday, March 29th, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. If Donnie ever put a smile on your face or helped you out, we would love for you to join us and share your story. In lieu of any flowers, please send donations to the Woodland Elementary School. There is nothing that Donnie enjoyed more than ensuring that kids are taken care of!
