Obituary

David Gerry Beckett, 78, passed away surrounded by his family on April 2, 2025, at Calais Community Hospital. Born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick on February 14, 1947, to the late Gerry and Julia (Allen) Beckett, David spent his life embodying the spirit of compassion and commitment. Graduating from Calais Memorial High School in 1965, David attended the University of Maine at Machias, earning a Bachelor's of Education. On September 1, 1968, he married his best friend, Patsy McNutt. Together, they created a life filled with love, kindness, and service to their community. David's dedication to education was evident in his 43-year tenure at Woodland Elementary School, shaping young minds and inspiring countless students. His commitment did not wane, even after his retirement in 2012. David's devotion extended beyond the classroom to his community. A faithful member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Calais, his service was ingrained in his spiritual life. His community involvement was vast. David was a member of St. Croix Lodge No. 46, AF & AM, where he served as Master in 1984, and as Secretary for over 35 years. David also was a member of St. Croix Chapter No. 17, Royal Arch Masons, St. Croix Council No. 11, Royal & Select Masters, Hugh de Payens Commandery No. 15, Knights Templar, Orion Chapter No. 45 O.E.S., Anah Shrine in Bangor, and the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite. His masonic journey also led him to serve as the Grand Representative to Japan for the Grand Lodge of Maine in 2015. He served as Trustee of Calais Regional Hospital, and served on the Board of Directors of Calais Methodist Homes for over 40 years. David was preceded in death by his parents, Gerry and Julia Beckett. Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Patsy; three children, Christopher Beckett and his wife, Mary, of Hampden, Jennifer Beckett and her companion, Justin, of Bucksport, and Martha Beckett and her husband, Herm Gadway, of Calais; five grandchildren, Tristen, Colin, Ian, Leila, and Hannah; sister, Patricia Sammer and her husband, Wayne; brother, Allen Beckett and his wife, Pam; brother-in-law, Robert McNutt; two nieces and two nephews, and their families. David will be remembered for his love for life and his pride of his family. He squeezed out life's simple gifts each and every day. His patient and kind demeanor helped make the world a better place. Visitation will be held 5 – 8 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2025, at St. Croix Masonic Lodge, 10 Calais Ave, Calais, where a Masonic Service will be conducted at 6 p.m. All are invited. The funeral will be celebrated by The Rev. Sara Gavit at 10 a.m. Monday, April 7, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 29 Church St., Calais. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory may be made to either St. Croix Masonic Lodge, 10 Calais Ave, Calais, ME 04619, or St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 29 Church St., Calais, ME 04619.
