Cynthia A. McGovern, lovingly known as Cindy, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, at Down East Community Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, on September 20, 1958, Cindy was the daughter of the late Clarence F. Murphy and Shirley A. (Sproat) Murphy. She grew up in the mill town of Baileyville, Maine, where she spent her childhood on Maine Street and made countless memories at the family camp on the Lamb Farm.
Cindy graduated from Woodland High School in 1976, and is remembered fondly for her radiant smile and infectious sense of humor. Her strong work ethic began early - at age 12, she started at Whimp's Take-Out in Baileyville. During high school, she worked at McDonald's, rising to the role of Supervisor. She later joined Gay's Shop-n-Save as a cashier/deli associate, quickly becoming Front-end Supervisor. Cindy remained with the store through it's transition to Hannaford and relocated to Machias Hannaford in 2000 dedicating a total of 23 years to the company.
In 2004, looking for a change of pace, Cindy began a new chapter at Machias Savings Bank, where she served several positions over her 20 years with them, including Teller Supervisor and Front Desk Receptionist. She retired in early 2024 at age 65, but her love for the community drew her back to Hannaford part-time just six weeks later. She continued working until her illness led to full retirement in 2025.
Cindy's happiest moments were spent at Murphy Camp on the Lamb Farm, surrounded by laughter, family, and friends. She was the life of every party, known for her boundless energy and love of good times. She treasured vacations with loved ones, and especially adored her granddaughter, Bella, who was the apple of her eye.
Cindy was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Shirley Murphy; her brother John F. Murphy; her beloved husband, Joe McGovern; and her great-nephew, Sawyer John Kendall.
She is survived by her daughter, Alexandra Cheney, and son-in-law, Jon Cheney; granddaughter, Isabella Mathews; and step-grandson, Silas Cheney, all of Marshfield. She also leaves behind her brother, Michael Murphy, and sister-in-law and best friend, Susan Murphy of Baileyville; nieces Erica Pike (and lifelong partner Jason Croman), Jessica McBrine (husband Andrew), Melissa Pike (Partner Nick Kendall), and Katie Sawyer (Husband Matthew); great-nieces and nephews Connor and Ava Croman, Alayna and Tanner McBrine, Gracie May Kendall, and Aiden and Austin Sawyer. Cindy is also survived by her devoted partner, Gary Dowling, to whom she shared a deep and enduring commitment, and a dear friend Jennie, both of Machias.
A celebration of life will be held at the Lee/Pellon Center in Machias on Saturday, September 27th at 11:00 AM. All who knew and loved Cindy are welcome to attend and share in honoring her memory. Cindy's legacy is one of joy, resilience, and unwavering love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
