Obituary

Ladies and gentlemen, raise your PBR's in honor of a man who was as reliable as a sunrise and as resilient as a lobster trap. Charles Louis Bernardini, also known as Louie or Captain Lou to all of his family and friends, has dropped anchor for the last time on July 14, 2025. Born in St. Stephen, NB, Canada on May 2, 1940, he was an ambitious soul who never met a challenge he couldn't conquer or an item he couldn't fix. He was a husband to Marilyn and a father to Chris, Meredith and Tony. Louie was skilled in all he did, from operating The Boston Shoe Store, cooking the family famous Bernardini Peanuts, achieving a 5 star rating with his Airbnb's and being a proud teacher to all of his students. He was a graduate of Calais Memorial High School Class of 1958. He went on to earn an Education Degree from Washington County Teachers College and The University of Maine. Louie could always be found in the same pew at church, refereeing a basketball game and in the summer months enjoying the front porch swing at Whispering Pines. A reliable fixture of his community, Louie was a volunteer with the Calais Rotary Club, The Calais Waterfront Walkway and Habitat for Humanity .He was awarded the Rocky Johnson Award and even became a Captain (with a license to prove it!). His love for his hometown was only matched by his passion for lobster fishing on the St. Croix River and his unwavering commitment to never letting a broken thing stay broken. Louie was affectionately known as Weeg or Weegie by his grandchildren Lindsay(Alex), Chloe, Hunter(Hannah), Kade, Kylie(Matt) and Kelsey(Jessie) and Great Grandchildren Easton, Silas, London, Sawyer, Willow and Nora. Louie leaves behind his wife, Marilyn Bernardini(Clarke), his children, Chris(Leslie) Bernardini, Meredith(Andy) Snowman and Tony Bernardini. His sister, Barbara Bernardini aka Bebe, Sisters-in-Law Loree Bernardini, Elaine Holland and Brothers-in-Law Donald(Nancy) Clarke, Grant(Brenda) Clarke. Special nephews and nieces David, Carolyn, Lisa, Orville, Little Louie, Casey, Peter, Paul, Jennifer, Michael, Emilee, Matthew and Lisa. Louie was predeceased by his parents, Charles Sr. and Patricia Bernardini, his brother Anthony Bernardini and his sister Patricia Hartford along with her husband Albert. Visitation will be held at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church Street, Calais, Maine, on Friday, July 18, 2025 from 5pm-8pm EDT.
