Catherine Gallagher left us on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on February 20, 1927, in Glasgow, Scotland as a triplet, Catherine was raised in a loving household by her parents, John and Grace Gallagher. Her early life was characterized by her deep Catholic faith, an attribute that saw her rowing to the mainland and walking six miles to attend church during her years living on Inisbofin Island, Ireland during WWII.
Catherine was a woman of steadfast faith and immeasurable resilience. After the war, she returned to Scotland and worked as a bus conductress until the death of her parents, after which she bravely ventured to the United States in 1960 to find employment as a housekeeper. She worked for several families in the Ossining, New York area, and ultimately was employed by Mr. Harry Mattin, founder of the Mearl Corporation, for many years. She was introduced to Eastport through her Mearl family and eventually made it her home. In Eastport, she was a valued member of the St. Joseph Church community. Her dedication to her work and her faith were an inspiration to many.
Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved parents, John and Grace, and her brothers, Francis and Maurice. She leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, carried on by her cousins, nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2025, at St. Joseph Church, 51 Washington St., Eastport followed by burial in the St. John Cemetery, 29 Hersey Rd., Pembroke.
