It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Carol Lee Smith, who left us on April 8, 2025, at her home in Baileyville. Born on July 9, 1957, in Calais, ME, Carol was the daughter of Neil and Shirley (Kneeland) Seavey. From her birth to her last moments, Carol lived a life full of kindness and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate to have known her. In the words of Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Carol made everyone feel loved, valued, and genuinely seen, a testament to her resilient spirit and witty demeanor.
Carol, a 1975 graduate of Woodland High School and resident of Baileyville, ME, was the epitome of hard work and perseverance, holding various occupations over the years before beginning her employment with the Baileyville School Department in 2002. Her work reflected her love for her community and the future generation; she enjoyed working in the school and the bonds she formed with both staff and students. Carol spent 17 years as a devoted custodian for Woodland Elementary School and Woodland High School before retiring in 2019. She was a woman of many talents, with an undeniable gift for cooking and baking, a passion for watching her granddaughters play sports, and an unbeatable skill at cribbage. Even in her retirement, she found joy in spending time with her family and riding the back roads - a testament to her simple, yet beautiful approach to life.
Carol is survived by her loving children, daughter Katie Smith and granddaughters Madison and Anna of Machias, and son Chase Smith and partner Eric Brooks of East Machias; and her mother, Shirley Seavey of Calais. She also leaves behind her brother Craig Seavey and wife Sally of Baileyville; her sister Linda Bailey of Princeton; her sister Patricia Mullen and husband James of Wesley; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Carol was preceded in death by her father, Neil Seavey; her siblings Jane Edwards, Brian Seavey, Gary Seavey, Brent Seavey, Darren Seavey, and Valerie Seavey; her brother-in-law Elmer Bailey; and the father of her children, Ralph W. "Billy" Smith Jr.
Arrangements are being handled by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services. To honor Carol's wishes, there will be no funeral service.
