Carleton M. Brown, a beloved husband, father, and revered educator, passed away at the age of 96 on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, surrounded by family at Calais Community Hospital. Born on April 9, 1928, in Calais, ME, to Clarence and Ellie (Wormell) Brown, Carleton was a man of great intellect and compassion. His vibrant personality and heartfelt kindness left an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to cross his path. His story is one steeped in devotion, to his family, his students, and his community.
Carleton's academic journey began at St. Croix High School in Baileyville, from where he graduated in 1945. He went on to obtain his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maine Orono. His commitment to his country led him to serve in the U.S. Army's engineering unit in Maryland with the Martin Co. after graduation. It was during this period that Carleton married the love of his life, Iris Russell, on December 27, 1951. His journey with Martin Co. continued until 1955, after which he returned to his alma mater to obtain his master's degree. It was here that Carleton discovered his true calling: educating the next generation of engineers. He remained a professor at the University of Maine Orono for 34 years, retiring in 1989. His dedication to his students earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious Ashley Campbell Award for outstanding teacher of the year.
Carleton's retirement, however, did not slow him down. He and Iris moved back to his childhood home in Baileyville and traveled the world together, creating a lifetime of memories. In his younger years, he was an avid basketball player. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, former member of the Barber Shoppers, and a loyal member of People's United Methodist Church in Baileyville, where he served as the choir director.
In addition to his parents, Carleton is predeceased by a son, Stephen Brown, and a brother, Francis Brown. He was survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Iris Brown, who passed away on February 14, 2025; two sons, Russell Brown and wife Carrie of Baileyville, who in Carleton and Iris' final years made it possible for them to stay in the family home, as was their wish and Russell's promise to them, and Jeffrey Brown and wife Catherine of Tempe, AZ; four grandchildren, Samuel, Abigail, Stephen, and Madelyn; along with his nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2025, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.
