Betty L. (Tracy) Sabattus-Moreside, 96, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2023, at Calais Community Hospital, surrounded by her family. Betty was born in Calais, Maine on November 16, 1927, to James and Susan Tracy.
Betty was the youngest of eight children, and with almost 5 years in between each child she had the unique situation of having nieces and nephews that were older than she was. In high school, she played basketball and was later proud to see her great grandkids play. She worked for over 20 years at the A&P in Calais until it closed, part of which was with her daughter Susan. She then started her job doing OR prep at the Calais Hospital where she met many friends. She was part of the American Legion Auxiliary. At 70, she retired upon the arrival of her first great-grandchild, and baby girl, Carson. It was then that she started a new job caring for Carson and two years later her sidekick, great-granddaughter Delayne. This was the thing she loved the most, spending time with her family and those she loved and passing on her stories and cooking tips.
Anyone who knew Betty, knew her as Nan. Nan had a love for cooking. Her famous rolls and apple pie were requested often, and by many. She would bake dozens of rolls on Thanksgiving to drop off to people around town. If anyone mentioned how much they loved her cooking, specifically her donuts, pies, or molasses cookies, Nan would have them made by the next day. She was also an avid bingo player and had many bingo buddies that she grew to love, and they returned that love knowing what a special person they had been blessed to meet.
Nan was greeted in heaven by: her parents, James and Susan (Waycott) Tracy; her siblings, Roy, Harry, Eddy, James, Viola, Alice (Spear), and Doris (Castonia) Tracy; her sister-in-law, Barbara Sabattus; her first husband, Paul Sabattus; her second husband, Carlton “Jack” Moreside; her children, Jeff, Gerry, and Susan (Carson) Sabattus; a grandchild, Amy Flood; special friends, Joyce and Fran; her four-legged companions, Mojo and Jasmine; and many nieces and nephews.
Nan’s legacy lives on in: her son, Mike Sabattus; her special granddaughter, who she thought of as a daughter, Tonia Lanier, and husband Austin; a daughter-in-law, Karen Sabattus; grandchildren, Michelle Sabattus, Andrew Flood, Susie, Rachel, and Cody Sabattus, Paul Sabattus and his wife, Jill; great-grandchildren, Carson, Branden, Delayne, Rylee, Cameron, Jack, Taylor, Addyson, and many more; her four-legged “baby boy,” Kyle; a special niece, Cathy Cook; a special friend, Carol Coyne; and many more nieces, nephews, friends, and bingo buddies.
